Position Summary
The Shipping Clerk is responsible for coordinating, preparing, and documenting outbound shipments while ensuring accuracy, safety, and efficiency. This role supports yard operations by pulling orders, tracking shipments, preparing required documentation, and coordinating with freight carriers to ensure the most beneficial service for the company.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Pull customer orders and prepare materials for shipment
Operate shipping and inventory software systems
Prepare, review, and compare bills of lading and shipping tickets
Ensure all lumber shipped is accurate in grade, width, length, and number of bundles
Verify the identity of trucking companies and customers prior to loading
Assist with loading and unloading delivery trucks in compliance with safety procedures
Coordinate and contract freight carriers to support operational and cost efficiency
Conduct inventories of lumber and materials as required
Maintain shipping logs and organized shipping records
Participate in action planning and continuous improvement efforts
Perform all other duties as assigned by the supervisor
Additional Duties
Assist other operators and departments as needed
Maintain a clean, organized, and debris-free work area
Qualifications & Skills
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
Ability to perform repetitive or continuous physical tasks over time
Ability to bend, stretch, twist, and reach as required by the job
Perform routine equipment maintenance and identify maintenance needs
Monitor gauges, dials, and indicators to ensure equipment is functioning properly
Ability to work effectively in a team environment
Ability to complete production tallies, downtime tallies, and daily reports
Basic mathematical skills
Understanding of basic machine components and operations
Strong eye-hand-foot coordination
Solid decision-making and problem-solving skills
Safety Responsibilities
Wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE), including hardhat, safety glasses, and hearing protection
Do not enter restricted areas without authorization
Report unsafe or malfunctioning equipment immediately to a supervisor
Request assistance when tasks exceed individual knowledge or ability
Visually inspect equipment and work areas prior to operation
Use standard lockout/tagout procedures when required
Use proper lifting techniques, lifting with legs and not the back
Follow all company safety policies and procedures
