The Division of Adult and Continuing Education, Workforce Development at LaGuardia Community College is seeking a full-time Administrative Program Assistant for the NYC Department of Small Business Services grant for the Community Health Workers Training Certificate (CHW) in the Workforce Development Department. Individuals participate in this program in order to prepare themselves for employment as Community Health Workers. Through the program, students earn a certificate and an opportunity to continue their education with CUNY by earning nine college credits towards an Associate’s degree in Human Services at LaGuardia, while also receiving internship experiences, career development support, and connections to healthcare industry employment opportunities.

Under the direction of the Community Health Worker Training Manager, the Administrative Program Assistant (APA) is responsible for assisting with recruitment and assessment, case management and student support, collaborating with internship sites, and administrative support for the program. Among different responsibilities of the APA are intake and screening activities, communication with students, coaching students and connecting them to resources, onboarding students to training and internships, tracking student outcomes, and providing career guidance focused on community health work, as well as referring students to a variety of courses, internships, and various opportunities in the community.

Position Description:

The Administrative Program Assistant is a key member of the staff of LaGuardia Community College, Community Health Worker Training Program. The role of the APA is to provide access to necessary supportive services in the college community, provide case management services as needed and requested by program participants.

The APA is responsible for supporting the students' growth and development by facilitating activities that would have them discover their potentials and career aspirations. The APA assists staff in conducting interviews to identify the students' strengths and weaknesses and develop learning solutions to address those di ffi culties.

Reporting to the Community Health Worker Training Manager, the APA will be working closely with the students and must be available to work flexible hours.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Assist with recruitment and outreach to enroll students into the training program

  • Assist with intake and screening activities, communication with students, coaching students and connecting them to resources, onboarding students to training and internships, tracking student outcomes, and providing career guidance focused on community health work

  • Provide outreach and advising for first-time college students

  • Work closely with the Course Instructors to ensure the success of the training program

  • Work closely with the Training Manager to support student persistence and program completion

  • Work closely with the Training Manager on student assessment and needs

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Associate’s Degree required; Bachelor’s Degree preferred

  • Three (3) years’ experience in working with unemployed or underemployed individuals in a community-based organization.

  • Knowledge of the public and community health field

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills

  • Good technology skills, with a high level of proficiency in Microsoft Office including MSWord and MS Excel spreadsheets

  • Demonstrated interest in working with diverse communities and supporting the success of underserved populations

  • Flexible and able to work some evening and/or weekend hours

  • Experience providing health education, harm reduction, or community health services a plus

  • Experience working with young adults and English language learners a plus.

This is a grant-funded position, currently funded until June 30, 2027, with the possibility of renewal.

About LaGuardia Community College

Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens , LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York (CUNY). LaGuardia offers more than sixty associate degree programs and more than fifty workforce training, ESOL, GED, and pre-college programs. In 2023, LaGuardia served approximately 24,000 students. More than one-third of LaGuardia’s degree-seeking students are born outside the United States; they come from 136 countries and speak 43 heritage languages.
