Job Overview
We are seeking a Microbiologist to support public health laboratory testing involving wastewater and water samples. The Microbiologist will perform molecular testing for SARS-CoV-2 and other public health targets, including sample processing, RNA extraction, qPCR/PCR testing, result analysis, quality control, documentation, and reporting.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on molecular laboratory experience, strong knowledge of molecular testing procedures, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a regulated laboratory environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform wastewater sample concentration, RNA extraction, and PCR/qPCR molecular testing.
- Process and examine water and wastewater samples for SARS-CoV-2 and other public health targets.
- Maintain accurate laboratory records and documentation for submitted samples.
- Evaluate, interpret, validate, and report laboratory test results.
- Perform required quality control checks for laboratory methods, materials, and equipment.
- Monitor laboratory inventory and assist with purchasing and supply management.
- Assist with preparing laboratory reports and compiling testing data.
- Participate in the evaluation and implementation of new products and technologies used in environmental laboratory testing.
- Follow established laboratory safety procedures and applicable quality standards.
- Maintain compliance with applicable certification requirements, policies, and procedures.
- Participate satisfactorily in laboratory proficiency testing programs.
- Communicate technical information clearly with laboratory staff and other stakeholders.
- Perform other laboratory-related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (B.S. or B.A.) in Biological Science or a closely related biological discipline.
- At least 1 year of experience performing RNA extraction and qPCR/PCR testing.
- Hands-on experience with molecular laboratory testing techniques.
- Knowledge of molecular testing principles, methods, and procedures.
- Ability to operate molecular and standard laboratory equipment.
- Knowledge of laboratory safety practices and procedures.
- Ability to analyze, interpret, document, and report laboratory results.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to maintain accurate laboratory records and documentation.
Preferred Qualifications
- 1 year of molecular testing experience.
- Experience with environmental, wastewater, or public health laboratory testing.
- Experience with RNA/DNA extraction and molecular assays.
- Familiarity with quality control procedures and laboratory proficiency testing.
- Experience working in a regulated laboratory environment.

Work Environment
This is a 100% onsite position in Indianapolis, Indiana, requiring in-person work Monday through Friday. The standard schedule is 8:15 AM to 4:45 PM, with a 1-hour lunch period or an available 30-minute lunch option.
Candidates must be available to work onsite and must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Science.
