Position: ADDM Abstractor
Location: Indianapolis, IN – Primarily Remote/Hybrid
Work Schedule: Monday–Friday
Interview: Web Cam

Office Location: 4150 N Keystone Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46205

Travel: Approximately 10%; occasional travel to the IDOH office and required CDC meetings. Travel to required CDC meetings is reimbursable; travel to the IDOH office is not reimbursable.

Position Overview

The ADDM Abstractor will support the Autism and Developmental Disability Monitoring (ADDM) Network within the Maternal and Child Health Division. The selected candidate will work closely with the Public Health Genetics Program, Data and Surveillance team, ADDM Project Coordinator, and other ADDM team members.

The primary responsibility is to complete clinical and medical abstractions of medical and education records for children reported with autism or suspected autism. The position will work with REDCap, electronic medical records (EMR), and electronic education records while maintaining accuracy, confidentiality, and compliance with ADDM Network requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform medical chart and education record abstractions for children reported to the ADDM Network.
  • Review and accurately abstract relevant clinical and developmental information from medical and education records.
  • Work with REDCap, EMR systems, and electronic education records.
  • Collaborate with ADDM program staff on program initiatives, projects, development, and funding opportunities.
  • Participate in ADDM Network calls and team meetings as required.
  • Collaborate with IDOH programs on projects related to children living with autism and developmental disabilities.
  • Assist with developing educational materials and webpage content.
  • Maintain hospital contact information for requesting medical records and remote medical-record access.
  • Maintain standard internal documentation for the ADDM project.
  • Respond to and triage public questions or concerns and direct them to the appropriate staff.
  • Communicate professionally with healthcare providers, hospitals, agency staff, and other stakeholders.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive medical and personal information.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Genetics, Nursing, Early Childhood Education/Development, Special Education, or a closely related field.
  • At least 2 years of experience with database systems and web-based applications, preferably including REDCap, EMR, and electronic education records.
  • At least 2 years of clinical/medical abstraction experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience handling and maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical ability, organization, and decision-making skills.

Highly Desired Qualifications

  • Background or substantial knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), developmental disabilities, or Special Education.
  • Experience working with hospital staff, physicians, healthcare providers, and medical records departments.
  • Public health, epidemiology, genetics, child health, clinical research, or surveillance experience.

Work Environment

This is primarily a remote Monday–Friday position. The candidate may be required to travel Indianapolis as needed and may occasionally travel out of state for required CDC meetings. The ADDM Abstractor will report directly to the ADDM Project Coordinator and will have no supervisory responsibilities.
