Project Accountant
Location: Chicago, Illinois
Position Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented Project Accountant to join a growing organization in the Chicago area. This role will be responsible for managing the financial aspects of multiple projects, partnering closely with project managers and operational leaders to ensure accurate budgeting, forecasting, reporting, and cost control throughout the project lifecycle.
The ideal candidate will have experience in project-based accounting environments such as construction, engineering, real estate development, property services, manufacturing, or professional services and possess strong analytical and organizational skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the full project accounting lifecycle from project setup through closeout.
- Prepare and maintain project budgets, forecasts, cost reports, and financial projections.
- Track project costs, commitments, change orders, subcontractor expenses, and purchase orders.
- Monitor project performance and identify cost overruns, risks, and opportunities.
- Prepare and submit customer billings, progress billings, draw requests, and supporting documentation.
- Review contracts and ensure compliance with billing requirements and project financial terms.
- Perform monthly project reconciliations and assist with month-end and year-end close activities.
- Prepare work-in-progress (WIP) schedules and project profitability reporting.
- Analyze budget-to-actual variances and provide recommendations to improve project performance.
- Support cash flow forecasting and project revenue recognition activities.
- Partner with project managers to maintain accurate project financial data and reporting.
- Assist with audits, internal controls, and financial compliance requirements.
- Maintain accurate project documentation and accounting records.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 3 years of Project Accounting, Construction Accounting, or related accounting experience.
- Experience supporting multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong understanding of job costing, budgeting, forecasting, and project financial reporting.
- Experience with progress billings, change orders, WIP reporting, and revenue recognition.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Experience with ERP systems such as Sage, Viewpoint, CMiC, NetSuite, Deltek, JD Edwards, or similar platforms preferred.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
