Director of Accounting / Assistant Controller
Overview
An established, multi-entity organization is seeking a hands-on accounting leader to oversee and elevate its accounting operations. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys creating structure, improving processes, developing teams, and building scalable accounting functions within a growing environment.
The successful candidate will serve as a key member of the finance leadership team, overseeing accounting operations, financial close activities, compliance, team development, and process improvement initiatives. This position offers significant visibility and long-term growth potential into a senior finance leadership role.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Close & Reporting
- Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes across multiple business entities.
- Establish and maintain standardized close procedures, timelines, and accountability measures.
- Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
- Review journal entries, account reconciliations, supporting schedules, and financial analyses.
- Drive continuous improvements in close efficiency, reporting quality, and overall accounting operations.
Team Leadership & Development
- Manage and mentor a team of accounting professionals, including senior and staff-level accountants.
- Provide training, coaching, and professional development opportunities.
- Assess team structure, responsibilities, and workflow allocation to maximize effectiveness.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Accounting Operations & Controls
- Develop, document, and standardize accounting policies, procedures, and workflows.
- Strengthen internal controls and financial governance across the organization.
- Reduce process dependency by creating scalable and repeatable accounting practices.
- Ensure all balance sheet accounts are reconciled accurately and consistently.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve information flow between accounting, finance, and operational departments.
Technical Accounting & Compliance
- Support complex accounting matters including lease accounting, consolidations, and intercompany transactions.
- Oversee financial statement preparation and compliance requirements across multiple entities.
- Coordinate external audit activities, including auditor requests, supporting schedules, and deliverables.
- Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards and corporate policies.
Systems & Process Improvement
- Optimize ERP and financial systems to improve reporting, efficiency, and data integrity.
- Partner with finance leadership on budgeting, forecasting, and reporting enhancements.
- Evaluate opportunities for automation and process improvements across accounting functions.
- Support ongoing implementation and utilization of financial planning and reporting tools.
Qualifications
Required
- CPA designation required.
- 8 years of progressive accounting experience with leadership responsibilities.
- Strong experience within multi-entity accounting environments.
- Hands-on knowledge of consolidations, intercompany accounting, and financial reporting.
- Experience improving accounting processes, internal controls, and close procedures.
- Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop accounting teams.
- Experience with mid-market ERP systems such as Sage Intacct, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics, or similar platforms.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
Preferred
- Experience within project-based, infrastructure, construction, energy, manufacturing, or asset-intensive industries.
- Background supporting high-growth, acquisition-driven, or evolving organizations.
- Experience working within private equity-backed or highly regulated environments.
- Exposure to project accounting, capital projects, fixed assets, or lease accounting.

Salary : $110,000 - $140,000
