Job Summary:
The Manufacturing / Industrial Engineer is responsible for identifying, leading, and executing continuous improvement initiatives on the shop floor to enhance efficiency, quality, and safety in a heavy industrial, automotive manufacturing environment. This role focuses on optimizing manufacturing processes, reducing waste, and supporting lean manufacturing practices. Supports projects related related to new technology, process changes, cost reductions, ergonomics and 5S, and quality improvements.
Essential Functions:
- Analyze current manufacturing processes to identify opportunities for improvement in productivity, efficiency, and quality.
- Lead and support Kaizen events, value stream mapping, time studies, and root cause analysis.
- Develop and implement standardized work instructions, process documentation, and workstation layouts.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (production, engineering, quality, maintenance, logistics) to drive shop floor improvements.
- Apply lean manufacturing tools and Six Sigma methodologies to reduce cycle times, eliminate waste, and improve workflow.
- Support equipment selection, procurement, and layout changes for new product introductions and line modifications.
- Use data to track KPIs such as OEE, scrap rates, cycle times, and implement corrective actions.
- Ensure ergonomics and safety are considered in all process improvement projects.
- Participate in PFMEA (Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) and support control plan development.
- Train production team members on new processes, procedures, and improvement initiatives.
- Using production, quality, tooling life, and other loss data to determine the areas in need of improvement.
- A majority of time will be spent on the shop floor working with operators and technical experts to troubleshoot problems and improve processes, targetting process cabaility and stability.
- Use core tools to address product launch and customer concern issues (8D, FMEA, CP, VSM).
- Complete Process Change Requests; plan and execute cost savings initiatives.
- Assist in the launch of new processes, equipment or products including APQP.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Interdepartmental cooperation on improvement projects.
- Implementation of error- and mistake-proofing in production.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Industrial or Mechanical Engineering preferred.
- Experience in the fastener industry is preferred.
- 2 years of experience in a manufacturing engineering or industrial engineering role, preferably in automotive.
- Familiar with automotive quality systems (IATF 16949, APQP, PPAP) preferred.
- Proficient in process analysis, time studies, and work measurement techniques.
- Use of lean manufacturing principles and tools (5S, SMED, Value Stream Mapping, etc.)
- Physically able to lift 30 pounds.
- Computer skills, specifically with CAD software and Excel, required.
- Knowledge and use of precision measurement equipment required.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.
Environmental Exposure:
- Noise – heavy machinery – in plant.
- Added responsibility as outlined in the Environmental Management System.
