Senior Backend Engineer, Data and Cloud (C75D7BC)

Referment is working with a workplace financial wellbeing business that delivers digital planning tools and professional guidance through an enterprise SaaS platform. Its engineering team builds the services and data infrastructure that support employee experiences and employer requirements across international markets.

As Senior Backend Engineer, Data and Cloud, you'll spend most of your time designing, building and shipping production systems. The work spans backend services, distributed systems, data pipelines and cloud infrastructure, with an emphasis on reliability, security and performance. You'll lead technical projects while staying directly involved in implementation.

Working with other engineers, Product and Data colleagues, you'll turn evolving requirements into scoped solutions and contribute to system-design decisions. AI-assisted development and automation are part of the working approach, including parallel coding workstreams and improvements to internal tooling. The role is based around the Denver team; remote applicants are considered individually.

The Role

• Build backend services that support an enterprise SaaS product, applying sound distributed-systems principles as the platform scales.
• Develop SQL-based data systems, pipelines and warehouse capabilities for product and operational use.
• Maintain cloud infrastructure, primarily on Google Cloud Platform, with attention to availability, performance and security.
• Use infrastructure as code, such as Pulumi or Terraform, to keep environments consistent and maintainable.
• Translate product and data requirements into practical technical plans and deliver projects within an agreed scope.
• Improve development and operational workflows through automation and AI-assisted tools, sharing documentation and engineering knowledge with the team.
  
  

What We're Looking For

• Hands-on backend engineering experience and ownership of scalable production systems in a SaaS environment.
• Practical experience with SQL databases, data pipelines and data warehouses.
• A solid understanding of distributed systems and cloud infrastructure; GCP is preferred, while AWS experience is also relevant.
• Experience with Node.js or Python, or another language alongside a willingness to learn and work in this stack.
• Awareness of security and compliance considerations in production, and experience using automation or AI tools to improve engineering work.
• The ability to break down complex problems, communicate technical decisions and deliver in a fast-moving, resource-constrained environment.
  
  

Useful Additional Experience

Multi-tenancy, larger platform-scaling initiatives and regulated or compliance-heavy enterprise software would be valuable. Prior fintech experience is useful but is not the only route into the role.

This could suit a backend engineer with strong data and infrastructure experience who wants to remain hands-on rather than move into a purely architectural or management position.
