What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead Artist (Unreal Engine 5 / Sports) position at Refactor Games?
Refactor Games is a AAA sports video game studio. We are developing the next generation of professional football (soccer) video games using Unreal Engine 5.
We’re looking for a Lead Artist to guide the visual direction and art production across all disciplines including characters, environments, UI, and presentation. You’ll manage a talented internal art team, integrate work from external partners, and help deliver a cohesive, high-fidelity look that balances realism with bold, stylized clarity.
- Driving the overall visual direction and maintaining consistency across all in-game and marketing art.
- Managing, mentoring, and reviewing work from internal artists across multiple disciplines.
- Coordinating with external art vendors to ensure assets meet studio standards for quality and performance.
- Partnering closely with the Art Director, Design, and Engineering teams to define pipelines, tools, and workflows.
- Establishing and maintaining the project’s art style guide, reference boards, and visual benchmarks.
- Providing feedback on lighting, color, composition, and materials to achieve a modern, broadcast-ready presentation.
- Collaborating with production to scope, prioritize, and schedule art deliverables for milestone targets.
- 7 years of professional game art experience, including at least 2 years in a leadership or management role.
- Shipped at least one high-quality console or PC title.
- Expert understanding of art production workflows in Unreal Engine 5.
- Strong sense of composition, lighting, color, and material definition.
- Proven ability to lead, mentor, and grow artists across multiple sub-disciplines.
- Experience reviewing and integrating outsource work for visual consistency and performance.
- Excellent communication skills and cross-disciplinary collaboration experience.
- Portfolio demonstrating high-quality, real-time art with an emphasis on style cohesion and visual clarity.
- Deep appreciation for football culture and broadcast-style presentation.
- Experience shipping sports, racing, or other large-scale real-time simulation games.
- Background in art direction, concept art, or visual development.
- Familiarity with multi-language production or globally distributed art pipelines.
