What are the responsibilities and job description for the Development Manager (Unreal Engine 5 / Sports) position at Refactor Games?
Refactor Games is a AAA sports video game studio. We are developing the next generation of professional football (soccer) video games using Unreal Engine 5.
We’re looking for a Development Manager who can empower our engineering team to do their best work—removing blockers, improving communication, and ensuring that every developer has the clarity, tools, and support they need to succeed. You’ll work closely with Engineering, Production, and QA leadership to keep schedules realistic, priorities aligned, and progress steady across multiple feature areas.
- Managing day-to-day execution across multiple engineering disciplines (gameplay, AI, network, rendering, tools).
- Translating high-level goals into actionable sprint plans and measurable milestones.
- Tracking task progress, identifying risks early, and proactively unblocking devs.
- Partnering with Technical Leads and Producers to scope work, plan deliverables, and allocate resources efficiently.
- Ensuring communication flows smoothly across departments—art, design, QA, and production.
- Improving workflows, build pipelines, and documentation practices for smoother iteration.
- Championing developer wellbeing and productivity through clear process, not bureaucracy.
- Supporting hiring, onboarding, and career growth for engineers at all levels.
- 5 years of professional experience in game development, including at least 2 years in a lead, producer, or development manager role.
- Proven success managing engineering teams shipping console or PC titles (Unreal Engine 5 experience preferred).
- Strong understanding of Agile/Scrum development and sprint planning within a game studio environment.
- Ability to translate technical detail into clear schedules, reports, and priorities.
- Excellent communication and organization skills; calm under pressure and proactive under uncertainty.
- Familiarity with Jira, Confluence, Perforce, and standard build/test pipelines.
- Experience managing cross-disciplinary engineering teams (network, rendering, tools, AI).
- Background as a gameplay or systems engineer before moving into management.
- Experience scaling teams quickly or working in startup-to-AAA transitions.
- Passion for soccer, sports simulation, or competitive multiplayer games.
