Medical Device- Sr NPI Manufacturing Engineer
Location: San Jose, CA
Duration: 12- Month Initial Contract- multiyear project, plans to extend

Overview: We are seeking a Senior Manufacturing Engineer with a strong mechanical and electromechanical background to lead sustaining manufacturing efforts for complex capital equipment. This role is primarily focused on mechanical manufacturing, with exposure to NPI as a secondary function. The ideal candidate will be deeply involved in failure analysis, process design, and root cause investigations, particularly for robotic systems and precision components.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead sustaining engineering efforts for electromechanical capital equipment.
- Own and optimize manufacturing processes for mechanical assemblies.
- Collaborate with production teams to ensure manufacturability and operator-friendly processes.
- Conduct detailed failure analysis using forensic tools (microscopy, lab testing, etc.).
- Drive Six Sigma and statistical process control initiatives.
- Develop and refine DTX (Design to eXcellence) strategies.
- Interface with cross-functional teams including R&D, Quality, and Operations.
- Mentor junior engineers and support continuous improvement initiatives.
Technical Requirements:
- Strong understanding of machine components: bearings, motors (stepper/brushless), linear rails, ball screws.
- Experience with harmonic drives, gearboxes, and precision mechanical systems.
- Hands-on experience in a machine shop or similar manufacturing environment.
- Ability to design processes that account for operator variability and reduce failure rates.
- Familiarity with capital equipment assembly challenges and component-level troubleshooting.
- Proficiency in Six Sigma, statistical analysis, and root cause methodologies.
Preferred Background:
- Experience in robotics, bearing systems, and precision electromechanical assemblies.
- Proven track record of solving complex assembly issues and driving resolution independently.
Targeting:
*Previous manufacturing experience in complex electromechanical equipment
*DFM/DFA and DFX experience
*Strong understanding of machine components: bearings, motors (stepper/brushless), linear rails, ball screws.
*Component level troubleshooting
*Experience with harmonic drives, gearboxes, and precision mechanical systems.
