This position is responsible for machining large precision components used in industrial food processing equipment. The primary responsibility of this role is operating large manual engine lathes to manufacture, repair, and refurbish rolls, shafts, and other critical machine components.

This is not a high-volume production machining position. Our facility specializes in custom manufacturing, equipment rebuilds, and one-of-a-kind aftermarket parts. The ideal candidate is a highly skilled machinist capable of reading complex drawings, planning machining operations, and consistently producing precision work with minimal supervision.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate large manual engine lathes to machine rolls, shafts, and precision components.
  • Machine new components and repair existing customer equipment to blueprint specifications.
  • Perform turning, facing, boring, threading, taper turning, grooving, and other precision machining operations.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, work orders, and manufacturing specifications.
  • Verify dimensions using precision measuring equipment including micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, bore gauges, and height gauges.
  • Select appropriate tooling, speeds, feeds, and machining methods based on material and part geometry.
  • Maintain tight tolerances while producing high-quality finished components.
  • Assist with machining operations on mills, keyseaters, drill presses, and other manual equipment as workload requires.
  • Safely move and position large workpieces using overhead cranes and lifting equipment.
  • Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with quality standards before releasing to the next operation.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area while supporting the facility's 5S initiatives.
  • Participate in continuous improvement activities focused on safety, quality, delivery, and productivity.
  • Work closely with Manufacturing Coordinators, Engineering, Welding, and Assembly to support customer delivery commitments.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of manual machining experience.
  • Extensive experience operating large manual engine lathes.
  • Ability to independently read and interpret mechanical blueprints.
  • Strong understanding of machining practices, tooling, feeds, speeds, and material characteristics.
  • Experience holding precision tolerances on large machined components.
  • Ability to use precision measuring instruments with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Experience safely operating overhead cranes and rigging equipment.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Journeyman Machinist certification or equivalent experience.
  • Experience machining large rolls, shafts, and heavy industrial equipment.
  • Experience with manual mills, horizontal boring mills, or large engine lathes.
  • Experience rebuilding industrial equipment.
  • Forklift certification.
  • Experience in a custom job shop or high-mix, low-volume manufacturing environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Stand, walk, bend, reach, and perform repetitive movements throughout the workday.
  • Safely handle large and heavy workpieces using overhead cranes and lifting equipment.
  • Work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, metal chips, coolants, and varying temperatures.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, steel-toe footwear, hearing protection, and other required safety equipment.

What Success Looks Like

A successful Machinist A consistently produces high-quality machined components safely, accurately, and on schedule. They take ownership of their work, solve machining challenges independently, support teammates, and contribute to Reading Bakery Systems' culture of continuous improvement, operational excellence, and Safety First, Always.
