Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Administrative Director of Surgical Services to provide strategic and operational leadership for a busy acute care perioperative department. This leadership role is responsible for overseeing all aspects of surgical services, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care while driving operational excellence, financial performance, regulatory compliance, employee engagement, and service line growth.


The Administrative Director partners closely with executive leadership, physicians, and multidisciplinary teams to optimize surgical operations, improve patient outcomes, and support organizational initiatives.

Compensation: $133K - $199K Annual Incentive Bonus

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Quality & Patient Safety

  • Provide executive oversight for all surgical services operations.
  • Promote a culture focused on patient safety, quality improvement, and evidence-based clinical practice.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, accreditation, and regulatory standards.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain departmental policies, procedures, and clinical standards.
  • Monitor quality metrics, patient outcomes, and operational performance indicators.
  • Lead initiatives to improve efficiency, reduce variation in clinical practice, and enhance overall care delivery.
  • Ensure preventive maintenance and regulatory compliance for surgical equipment.
  • Optimize patient throughput through effective scheduling, admission/discharge planning, and coordination across departments.
  • Foster interdisciplinary collaboration to improve continuity of care.

Operational Leadership

  • Direct daily operations across multiple perioperative service areas.
  • Maintain efficient workflows while ensuring exceptional patient care.
  • Collaborate with physicians, anesthesia providers, and hospital leadership to improve operational performance.
  • Lead departmental planning and execution of operational initiatives.
  • Ensure staffing models support patient volume and departmental productivity.
  • Oversee implementation of process improvements and operational best practices.

Patient Experience

  • Champion an exceptional patient and family experience.
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve patient satisfaction scores.
  • Utilize patient feedback and quality data to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Promote a culture of service excellence throughout the department.

Leadership & Talent Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop department managers and clinical leaders.
  • Foster employee engagement, accountability, teamwork, and professional development.
  • Recruit, retain, and develop high-performing staff.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, coaching, and succession planning.
  • Ensure appropriate staffing levels and competency validation.

Strategic Growth

  • Collaborate with executive leadership and physicians to expand surgical service lines.
  • Identify opportunities for program growth and operational enhancements.
  • Support implementation of new technologies and innovative surgical practices.
  • Participate in strategic planning initiatives that improve market competitiveness.

Financial Management

  • Develop and manage departmental operating and capital budgets.
  • Monitor financial performance and identify budget variances.
  • Implement strategies to improve productivity and reduce operating expenses.
  • Manage labor utilization, scheduling efficiency, premium pay, and staffing productivity.
  • Oversee supply utilization, inventory management, and cost containment initiatives.
  • Ensure responsible stewardship of departmental resources.

  • Maintain compliance with:
  • Joint Commission Standards
  • CMS Regulations
  • State and Federal Healthcare Regulations
  • Infection Prevention Standards
  • Patient Safety Requirements
  • Organizational Policies and Code of Conduct


Department Overview

The Surgical Services department supports a high-volume acute care surgical program featuring:

  • Approximately 11 operating rooms, with expansion underway to 13 ORs
  • Major renovation and expansion of:
  • Sterile Processing Department (SPD)
  • Pre-Operative Unit
  • Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)
  • Approximately 450–500 surgical procedures per month
  • Broad surgical specialties including:
  • Cardiovascular Surgery
  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Neurosurgery/Spine
  • General Surgery
  • Gynecology
  • Urology
  • Vascular Surgery
  • High-volume Level II Trauma surgical services


Leadership Responsibilities

The Administrative Director provides oversight for multiple perioperative departments, including:

  • Operating Room (OR)
  • Sterile Processing Department (SPD)
  • Pre-Operative Services
  • Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)
  • Gastrointestinal (GI) Services
  • Pre-Admission Testing (PAT)

Direct Reports

  • Operating Room Manager
  • Sterile Processing Manager
  • Perioperative Services Manager

Team Size

  • Approximately 75 Full-Time Employees (FTEs)


Required Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) – Required
  • Master's Degree (MSN, MHA, MBA, or related field) – Preferred

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of Director-level leadership experience overseeing Surgical Services in an acute care hospital.
  • Minimum 3 years of progressive leadership experience within acute care perioperative services.
  • Demonstrated experience managing:
  • Operating Room
  • PACU
  • Sterile Processing
  • Pre-Operative Services
  • Surgical Service Line Operations
  • Strong background in budgeting, workforce planning, quality improvement, regulatory compliance, and operational management.
