Job Description
We are seeking a Post-Doctoral Researcher in Physical Chemistry – Colloid & Surface Science to join our team for a 12-month post-doctoral opportunity.
This is a unique opportunity for a recent PhD graduate to apply rigorous academic training to real-world industrial challenges — pioneering new analytical methodologies to understand the behavior of complex fluids and multi-phasic systems and playing a critical role in bridging fundamental science with tangible product innovation.
Your mission will be to characterize and understand the mechanisms of surface and interfacial phenomena, as well as bulk flow properties, that drive the stability, performance, and sensory experience of products. This role provides an opportunity to combine advanced laboratory research with practical product innovation.
A Day in the Life
As a Post-Doctoral Researcher in Physical Chemistry – Colloid & Surface Science, you will:
- Pioneer new methodologies: Design and develop advanced protocols for the characterization of complex fluids and multi-phasic systems, including emulsions, dispersions, and foams, to advance understanding of formulation behavior.
- Master multi-scale rheological characterization: Conduct in-depth studies on both Interfacial Rheology, to understand the viscoelastic properties of adsorbed layers, and Bulk Rheology, to evaluate flow behavior, yield stress, and thixotropy across a range of product systems.
- Unlock the science of surfaces and interfaces: Utilize state-of-the-art tensiometers to measure static and dynamic surface and interfacial tension, generating insights into surfactant kinetics and emulsification processes.
- Translate complex science into actionable insight: Synthesize and interpret sophisticated physical chemistry data and communicate findings clearly to support formulation scientists and cross-functional teams in making informed product decisions.
- Be the scientific bridge across the organization: Act as a key connection between research teams and various business and product teams, collaborating closely to solve technical challenges related to product application and durability.
- Stay at the frontier of the field: Maintain an active awareness of academic literature and emerging technologies in colloid and interface science to support continued innovation in formulation science.
Qualifications
We are looking for an innovator, entrepreneur, integrator, and problem-solver with a research-minded approach who is eager to bring academic rigor and fresh scientific thinking to real-world product innovation.
Education
- Recently completed PhD in Physical Chemistry, Colloid Science, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related field is required.
Technical Expertise
- Deep knowledge in the characterization of complex fluids, including a strong understanding of the relationship between microstructure and macroscopic properties.
- Proven hands-on experience with tensiometry techniques, including:
- Wilhelmy plate
- Du Noüy ring
- Pendant drop methods
- Strong background in interfacial rheology, including oscillating drop/bubble and bicone methodologies.
- Deep understanding of surfactant science, self-assembly mechanisms, and stabilization dynamics in colloidal systems.
Soft Skills & Attributes
- Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset, with intellectual curiosity to investigate complex physical phenomena and develop clear, actionable insights.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain sophisticated scientific concepts to non-expert audiences across formulation, product, and business teams.
