- Assist in directing crews in highway and park maintenance and construction work, plan equipment and material for projects.
- Assist shop operations in directing stockroom operations, scheduling of maintenance, and shop activities.
- Assist in direction of year round emergency maintenance including scheduled on-call rotation.
- Perform maintenance and repair work on County highways, parks and facilities.
- Operate equipment used in highway and park construction and maintenance work.
- Plan work zone, signing, tools, and materials for work projects.
- Maintain records of labor, machinery, and materials and complete reports.
- Request required material.
- Interpret plans, drawings, and maps.
- Plow snow and salt/sand icy roads and parking lots.
- Perform minor repairs on machinery and equipment.
- Coordinate vacation with Highway Assistant Superintendent.
- All other job duties as assigned.
Supervision Received: Receives supervision from the Highway Superintendent.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Three (3) years experience in related maintenance and construction work, including some experience in supervision and equipment operation.
- Valid Wisconsin Class A Commercial Driver's license
- Prompt and regular attendance including the ability to work on-call and call-in schedules
- *Or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Considerable knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in the area of related maintenance, grading, excavation, paving, concrete and construction work.
- Ability to supervise and assign a crew of employees.
- Ability to operate and supervise the use of various types of highway and park equipment.
- Ability to maintain records and make reports.
- Ability to deal effectively with the general public.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Physical Qualifications
- Continuous (67-100% of workday) hearing, use of far and near vision, lifting, carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing up to 1-10 pounds, light handling and fingering.
- Frequent (34-66% of workday) standing, walking, climbing using legs and arms for support, balancing, bending/twisting, reaching, feeling, talking, lifting, carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing up to11-20 pounds and pushing/pulling objects weighing up to11-40 pounds on wheels and medium intensity handling.
- Occasional (1-33% of workday) sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, ascending or descending ladders, lifting, carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing up to 21-51 pounds and medium to high intensity fingering.
- Lifting over 51 pounds requires assistance. Assistance means the use of levers, work machines, another person, etc.

Copy machine, measuring devices, hand tools such as a hammer, power tool, chainsaw, shovel/broom, and transit/grade equipment; transportation vehicles such as an automobile, 35,000 GVW truck and boat; highway machinery, construction and building maintenance equipment, personal protective equipment such as breathing apparatus, steel tip boots, hearing and eye protection; and 2-way radio.
