The Estimating Manager is responsible for leading and coordinating all preconstruction activities from project identification through turnover to operations. This role plays a critical part in driving profitable growth, improving estimating accuracy, managing bid strategy, supporting business development efforts, and ensuring seamless coordination between estimating, sales, project management, manufacturers, and operations.
The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, proactive, and experienced in commercial construction preconstruction processes, with strong knowledge of athletic equipment, bleachers, lockers, casework, specialty subcontracting, and K-12/public procurement environments.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating & Bid Management
- Oversee and manage all preconstruction and estimating activities.
- Review drawings, specifications, addenda, and bid documents.
- Develop accurate project takeoffs, budgets, pricing, and proposal strategies.
- Coordinate vendor and manufacturer quotations.
- Ensure estimates align with company margin targets and risk standards.
- Lead bid reviews and project risk assessments prior to submission.
- Manage bid schedules, deadlines, and workload prioritization.
- Assist with negotiated work, conceptual budgeting, and design-build opportunities.
- Track bid results, win/loss metrics, and estimating performance.
Preconstruction Coordination
- Serve as the primary bridge between sales, estimating, operations, and project management during preconstruction.
- Identify scope gaps, exclusions, conflicts, and constructability concerns.
- Coordinate subcontractor and supplier communication during bidding phases.
- Review project logistics, scheduling concerns, lead times, and installation considerations before award.
- Participate in turnover meetings with project management and operations teams.
- Assist in developing procurement strategies for long-lead materials.
Business Development Support
- Support sales leadership with pricing strategies and market intelligence.
- Attend pre-bid meetings, site visits, and client meetings as needed.
- Assist with relationship development involving architects, general contractors, school systems, and owners.
- Support strategic growth initiatives for:
- Athletic equipment
- Bleachers
- Scoreboards
- Lockers
- Casework
- Athletic flooring
- Outdoor athletic products
- Specialty construction scopes
Leadership & Process Improvement
- Help develop and standardize estimating and preconstruction SOPs.
- Train and mentor estimators and inside sales staff.
- Improve estimating systems, templates, workflows, and reporting.
- Assist leadership with forecasting backlog, pipeline activity, and workload planning.
- Collaborate with executive leadership on pricing governance and margin management.
- Promote accountability, communication, and operational alignment across departments.
Qualifications
Required
- 5 years of experience in commercial construction estimating or preconstruction management.
- Strong understanding of construction drawings, specifications, and bid processes.
- Experience with public procurement and K-12 construction projects preferred.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
- Ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines simultaneously.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Proficiency with:
- Microsoft Office Suite
- Bluebeam
- Construction estimating software
- ERP/CRM systems (Acumatica experience preferred)
Preferred
- Experience in specialty subcontracting environments.
- Knowledge of athletic equipment, bleachers, lockers, casework, or related specialty products.
- Existing relationships within the Southeast commercial construction market.
- Experience managing or mentoring estimating teams
