- The salary for this position is the minimum of the range.**This entry level position provides a range of emergency basic life support services (BLS) and advanced life support services (ALS) to persons who, as a result of illness or trauma, require such services.Work is carried out under stressful conditions and must be performed to protocols established by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Services Systems governing Paramedics. The Paramedic I primarily provides medical care and treatment to individuals critically ill and/or injured due to fire, motorized conveyance and other accidents or rescue situations. Responsibilities also include data entry, preparation and maintenance of records and reports relating to emergency care administered. Work is performed with considerable technical independence and is evaluated in terms of the applications of approved techniques, safety, and skilled operations of equipment in transporting patients to hospitals or other locations of emergency care.
- Provide compassionate, responsive, and accurate customer service.
- Respond to calls for emergency services.
- Under the guidance of the Jurisdictional Medical Director, shall provide BLS services including assessment, treatment and accompany persons to area hospitals that are at risk of serious injury or death as a result of illness, injury, or serious trauma.
- Comply with current Occupational Safety and Health Administration Standards for Respirators and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus.
- Assesses the effect of treatment provided to a victim/patient; establishes appropriate level of contact with Medical Control to discuss ongoing and/or further treatment, as necessary. Interprets physicians instructions regarding treatment.
- Assesses the condition of a victim/patient, records significant conditions and reactions, and notifies physician of a victim/patient condition and reaction to interventions, treatments, and other significant incidents.
- May act as team leader, in doing so, analyzes the situation presented, determines safety precautions necessary (including those for communicable diseases) and evaluates victim/patient needs to provide appropriate patient treatment.
- Accurately and quickly communicate findings to crew, dispatcher, and medical control.
- May be called to assist more than one person at a time. In such situations, conducts victim/patient assessment(s), assigning a priority to each victim/patient (triage). Also communicates treatment, care, and transport plans to the appropriate medical facility, according to policies and EMS standards, and to the crew.
- Function at the National and Maryland Licensed Paramedic level including skills and interventions to include but not limited to basic life support and advanced life support. Patient assessment, EKG monitoring and interpretation, cardiac defibrillation and pacing. Basic and advanced airway insertions and maintenance, establis and maintain intravenous access as well as give medications intravenous, intermuscular, interosseous, and nasal.
- Prepare and maintain records of administration of all emergency care administered through preparation of hard copy reports and entry of data into personal computer.
- Inspect and perform routine maintenance or minor repairs on emergency vehicles and equipment to insure availability in case of emergency.
- Station maintenance and repair.
- Interpretation and application of policies, procedures, logs, and inspection reports.
- Participate and provide continuous education and training.
- Answer, respond to, or re-direct telephone calls.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
