Position Summary
An industrial engineering team is seeking an experienced Automation & Controls Engineer to support the development, integration, and optimization of electrical control systems used in heavy material handling equipment and overhead lifting applications.
This role combines system design, PLC/HMI programming, commissioning support, and troubleshooting responsibilities for both new installations and modernization projects. The position is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on industrial automation work in a fast-paced engineering environment.

Key Responsibilities
Controls Engineering & System Development
- Design and implement control systems for industrial lifting and motion-based equipment
- Develop, modify, and troubleshoot PLC logic and HMI interfaces for automated operations
- Produce electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts for manufacturing and field implementation
- Select and integrate components including VFDs, relays, sensors, communication hardware, and safety devices
- Ensure control systems align with applicable industrial standards and operational requirements
- Support installation, startup, and commissioning activities for new and upgraded systems
- Configure PLCs, motor drives, and industrial communication networks
- Perform system validation, troubleshooting, and performance optimization
- Assist with tuning and functional testing of automated equipment
- Diagnose and resolve issues involving industrial electrical and automation systems
- Provide technical support to maintenance personnel and field service teams
- Assist with retrofit projects, modernization efforts, and control system improvements
- Support operational reliability initiatives and downtime reduction efforts
- Partner with engineering, operations, and project management teams on system implementation
- Contribute technical expertise during design reviews and project planning
- Mentor or assist junior technical team members when needed
- Participate in process improvement efforts focused on efficiency, safety, and equipment performance
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Automation Engineering, or related field (or equivalent hands-on experience)
- Minimum of 5 years of industrial controls engineering experience
- Strong experience with:
- PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar platforms)
- HMI and SCADA systems
- Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and motor control systems
- Industrial automation and motion control applications
- Ability to create and interpret electrical schematics and control documentation
- Familiarity with industrial communication protocols such as Ethernet/IP and Modbus
- Working knowledge of motion systems involving hoist, trolley, and bridge operations
- Understanding of applicable standards including CMAA, NEC/NFPA 70, and ASME
- Experience with advanced automation technologies such as anti-sway systems, load monitoring, or automated crane controls
- Background supporting commissioning and system integration projects in heavy industrial environments
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting capabilities
- Comfortable working in industrial facilities and elevated work areas when required
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
