About Q

Q is a firearms manufacturer focused on innovation, quality, and doing things differently. We move fast, expect ownership, and don't tolerate mediocrity. If you like clean processes, tight tolerances, and solving real problems, you'll fit in here.

Position Summary

The Metrology Engineer owns everything related to measurement at Q. This role is responsible for CMM programming, calibration systems, inspection strategy, and making sure our data is accurate and actionable.

You will be the go-to expert for dimensional measurement. That means turning prints into measurement plans, ensuring our systems are dialed, and working directly with manufacturing and engineering to solve problems quickly and correctly.

This is a hands-on, high-impact role. If measurement is off, everything is off.

Key Responsibilities

CMM Programming & Dimensional Inspection

  • Develop, validate, and maintain CMM programs using Zeiss Calypso
  • Set up, operate, and verify performance of Zeiss CMM equipment
  • Interpret GD&T per ASME Y14.5 and convert into measurement plans
  • Execute first article inspections (FAI) per AS9102 or customer requirements
  • Perform in-process and final inspections and drive nonconformance reporting

Keyence Vision & Optical Measurement

  • Program and operate Keyence IM Series or equivalent systems
  • Build repeatable inspection routines for production and incoming inspection
  • Correlate Keyence and CMM data to ensure measurement alignment
  • Identify opportunities to replace contact measurement with faster optical methods

Calibration & Gage Management

  • Own the calibration program (ISO 9001 / AS9100 aligned)
  • Maintain schedules, records, and traceability to NIST standards
  • Manage all gage inventory, condition, and procurement
  • Handle out-of-tolerance events and corrective actions

Measurement System Analysis & Quality Engineering

  • Run Gage R&R and MSA studies and present results clearly
  • Perform capability studies on critical features
  • Support Control Plans and Measurement Plans for NPI/APQP
  • Support PPAP/FAI packages and audits
  • Apply SPC to identify trends and process drift

Continuous Improvement & Collaboration

  • Work directly with manufacturing, engineering, and suppliers to solve issues
  • Drive root cause and corrective action (RCCA)
  • Evaluate and implement new measurement technologies
  • Train technicians and operators on measurement tools and GD&T
  • Support supplier qualification and source inspection when needed

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 5 years in metrology, inspection, or quality engineering in a precision environment
  • Strong experience with Zeiss Calypso (programming and validation)
  • Hands-on experience with Keyence vision systems
  • Deep understanding of GD&T (ASME Y14.5)
  • Experience running calibration programs in ISO environments
  • Experience with Gage R&R and MSA (Minitab or similar)
  • Experience with FAI (AS9102 or equivalent)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Zeiss hardware (Contura, Accura, etc.)
  • Exposure to other CMM platforms (PC-DMIS, MCOSMOS, Renishaw)
  • Experience with FARO arms, laser trackers, or scanning systems
  • SPC and process capability experience
  • Aerospace, defense, or regulated manufacturing background
  • ASQ certifications (CQE, CCT, CMS/CMSC)
  • Experience supporting APQP / PPAP / NPI processes

The Company reserves the right to conduct background investigations and/or reference checks on all of its potential employees as well as a drug screening.
