After-School Teacher / Program Leader (Ages 4–7)

Private School
Durham, NC Full Time
POSTED ON 7/20/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 9/20/2026

Do you believe that children learn best when they're moving, creating, imagining, and playing?

Do you see a yoga mat as a place for self-regulation, a paintbrush as a tool for self-expression, and a storybook as an invitation to wonder?

We're looking for an exceptional educator to design and lead a creative after-school program for children ages 4–7. This is more than homework help or childcare—it's an opportunity to create an environment where children can move their bodies, engage their imaginations, build relationships, and develop the confidence and skills that support lifelong learning.

Our ideal teacher is passionate about human development and understands that children thrive when learning is active, joyful, and meaningful. You'll have the freedom to design engaging experiences that integrate movement, creativity, literacy, and play into each afternoon.

Who You Are

You are someone who...

  • Is deeply passionate about child development and believes childhood should be filled with wonder, creativity, and exploration.
  • Loves working with young children and delights in their curiosity, questions, and unique ways of seeing the world.
  • Enjoys designing engaging, hands-on learning experiences rather than relying on worksheets or rigid routines.
  • Thinks creatively and isn't afraid to try new ideas.
  • Brings warmth, enthusiasm, and a playful spirit to your work.
  • Sees behavior as communication and values relationships before compliance.
  • Is flexible, reflective, and eager to continue learning alongside children and colleagues.
  • Believes that movement, play, art, stories, and imagination are essential parts of healthy development.

What You'll Do

Design and facilitate a dynamic after-school program that may include:

  • Yoga, mindfulness, and movement activities
  • Occupational therapy-inspired exercises that support regulation, coordination, and body awareness
  • Process-focused art experiences
  • Read-alouds, storytelling, and early literacy activities
  • Theater games, dramatic play, and creative expression
  • Outdoor exploration and nature play
  • Cooperative games that build social-emotional skills
  • Open-ended projects inspired by children's interests

You'll create an environment where children feel safe to take risks, express themselves, solve problems, collaborate with peers, and discover their strengths.

We're Looking For Someone Who

  • Has experience teaching or working with children ages 4–7.
  • Has a background in education, early childhood, child development, theater, art education, recreation, occupational therapy, or a related field.
  • Enjoys developing original curriculum and adapting activities based on children's interests and needs.
  • Understands the importance of play-based and experiential learning.
  • Can balance structure with flexibility.
  • Is energetic, organized, and comfortable leading groups of young children.

What We Value

We believe childhood is not something to rush through—it's a time for exploration, connection, and joyful growth.

We value:

  • Human development over academic acceleration.
  • Curiosity over perfection.
  • Creativity over compliance.
  • Relationships before behavior management.
  • Process over product.
  • Movement as an essential part of learning.
  • Play as the work of childhood.
  • Joy, kindness, and lifelong learning.

If you're excited by the idea of creating afternoons filled with movement, stories, art, imagination, laughter, and meaningful connection—and you're passionate about helping young children flourish—we'd love to meet you.
