POSTED ON 9/3/2025

What You'll Do

Principal Financial Group is seeking a Technology Risk Management Specialist – Director to join our Corporate Risk team!  This is an outstanding opportunity to shape the continued evolution of a best-in-class enterprise technology risk program.

In this second line (of defense) role, you will ensure that our technology risk practices align with the company’s strategic objectives, regulatory expectations, and industry standards. Acting as a trusted advisor to senior leaders, you will drive meaningful improvements in how we identify, assess, manage, and report on technology risks. The ideal candidate excels at building strong relationships, influencing outcomes, and delivering on commitments. This is your opportunity to make a significant impact—advancing enterprise risk capabilities and helping to embed world-class technology risk management across the organization.

Your focus will include:

  • Strategy & Vision:  Help lead the continued evolution of the enterprise IT/Technology Risk Management Program.  Partner with business and technology stakeholders to assess and resolve complex risk issues across cybersecurity, IT operations, data management, and technology resiliency. Ensure alignment with internal frameworks, enterprise objectives, and evolving regulatory requirements.
  • Consulting & Influence: Advise senior leadership on material technology risks and appropriate mitigation strategies. Embed risk-informed thinking across technology initiatives by collaborating with control owners, system architects, and risk partners. Drive integration of risk principles into transformation efforts, digital innovation, and enterprise strategies.
  • Programs & Capabilities:  Support the design and enhancement of IT risk tools, methodologies, and reporting.  Lead or coordinate risk assessments and control evaluations using internal and industry-standard frameworks (e.g., NIST CSF, ISO 27001, COBIT).  Stay informed of emerging risks and technologies to ensure risk practices remain proactive and resilient.
  • Governance & Oversight:  Provide independent review and credible challenge of first-line risk management activities. Monitor IT, data, and cybersecurity risks, identifying gaps in risk posture and recommending enhancements to policies, controls, and standards. Evaluate and help strengthen alignment to the enterprise risk appetite and tolerance levels.
  • Reporting & Communication:  Develop concise and impactful reporting for senior leaders and governance forums on the current and emerging risk landscape. Establish and deliver key performance and risk indicators (KRIs/KPIs) to measure the effectiveness of IT risk practices. Foster transparency and risk awareness across stakeholders through clear communication and strategic insights.

Who You Are

  • Bachelor's degree preferably in computer science, technology, engineering, or math, or equivalent experience.
  • 10 years of work-related experience in information technology, IT risk/audit, or information security resulting in expertise in engineering, network infrastructure, cybersecurity, and/or IT risk & audit.
  • Proven leadership experience with a foundation in risk management.
  • Outstanding planning, project management, problem-solving, analytical, time management, and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated skill in developing relationships and influencing collaborators.
  • Ability to communicate technical risk to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Industry experience with advanced risk analysis concepts and tools.
  • Preferred certifications: CISSP, CRISC, CISA, AWS certifications.
  • Availability for on-call support as needed.
