- Safely transport students with disabilities to and from school, home, and approved educational activities.
- Operate a school van in accordance with federal, state, local, and School Board policies and regulations.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and report maintenance or safety concerns promptly.
- Assist students with entering and exiting the vehicle, including the use of wheelchair lifts, safety restraints, and other adaptive equipment, as needed.
- Ensure students are properly secured before operating the vehicle.
- Maintain appropriate student behavior and follow established student management procedures.
- Follow assigned routes and schedules while maintaining flexibility for route changes.
- Maintain accurate daily transportation records, mileage logs, and incident reports.
- Communicate effectively with parents, school administrators, teachers, and transportation staff regarding transportation needs.
- Maintain confidentiality of student information in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Attend required training, including student management, first aid/CPR (if required), and specialized transportation training.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Transportation.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Valid Virginia driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to obtain and maintain any certifications required by the Division and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Ability to safely operate a passenger van used for student transportation.
- Ability to work effectively with students with disabilities.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
- Ability to lift, push, pull, and assist students as needed.
- Ability to bend, stoop, climb, and enter/exit the vehicle multiple times throughout the day.
- Ability to safely operate vehicle safety equipment and wheelchair lifts, when applicable.
- Frequent driving in varying weather and traffic conditions.
- Daily interaction with students with diverse physical, behavioral, and emotional needs.
- Exposure to noise, outdoor weather conditions, and frequent entering and exiting of the vehicle.
