Position Description
Title: School Security Officer
Reports to: Assistant Superintendent of Support Services or Designee
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Summary: Provides daily security for the school building and property and ensures the safety, security and welfare of all students, staff, and visitors in the assigned school.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
1. Patrols and monitors assigned areas of the school buildings, grounds and parking lots to deter, detect, report, and stop violations of the law and/or school board policies.
2. Assists administrators and staff in crisis and emergency situations.
3. Helps to advance a more positive attitude toward rules, laws, authority, and responsibilities among youth.
4. Maintains confidentiality of information and actions relating to students, their parents, and employees of the school district.
5. Monitors surveillance equipment.
6. Supervises and directs adult and student movement.
7. Assists with directing morning and afternoon traffic duty as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Support Services.
8. Performs other related duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Support Services, principal, or appropriate administrators.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
1. Must be certified through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS)SSO Certification Program (§ 9.1-102.44). SSO training requirements and other Regulations can be found in Regulation 6 VAC 20-240.
2. Must possess a high school diploma (or equivalent) with some experience or training in a security-related field or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide noted knowledge, skills, and abilities.
3. Must possess the ability to acquire knowledge of School Board policies and procedures and Student Rights and Responsibilities. Security experience in a public school preferred.
4. Must possess the ability to read, write, speak, and understand Standard English.
5. Must have basic computer skills using Microsoft Office programs.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must possess a valid Virginia driver's license with positive DMV points.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside-weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Ten-month employment. Salary Range: $36,035 to $55,854
EVALUATION
Performance of the position will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the Prince Edward County School Board's policy on evaluation of classified personnel.
