What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medium-Voltage Circuit Breaker Field Technologist position at Powell Houston-Canton?
Medium-Voltage Circuit Breaker Field Technologist
Location: Queen Creek, AZ | Schedule: Four 10s, Monday–Thursday, 6:00 AM–4:30 PM
A day in this role
Your morning starts at 6:00 AM in our Queen Creek facility, where you'll review work orders and wiring diagrams pulled from Powell's database. A customer rings in with an urgent field issue—you provide remote guidance, walking them through electrical checks and control logic until the equipment is stabilized. Back on the bench, you dive into hands-on work: rebuilding and testing medium-voltage circuit breakers, contactors, grounding devices, and other distribution components.
Midday, you're integrating the latest mechanical and dielectric design enhancements into previously sold equipment, then validating performance against IEEE/ANSI and Powell Factory Acceptance Testing standards. Later, you upgrade a breaker to a new continuous current rating and modify control voltage while adding an undervoltage or second-trip accessory. Throughout the day, you keep your work area safe and orderly, and collaborate with Project Management, Sales, and Quality to align on priorities and customer needs. You report directly to the Breaker Department Manager.
What you'll tackle
- Deliver remote technical assistance and on-bench troubleshooting, repair, and testing of medium-voltage electrical distribution equipment.
- Build, refurbish, rebuild, repair, and test circuit breakers, contactors, grounding devices, and related apparatus.
- Retrofit older Powell equipment with current and future design updates to enhance mechanical and dielectric performance.
- Perform testing to applicable IEEE/ANSI standards and Powell Factory Acceptance Testing protocols.
- Execute electrical and mechanical upgrades: control voltage changes, increased continuous current ratings, and addition of undervoltage/second-trip devices.
- Interpret Powell electrical schematics and wiring diagrams; retrieve and print documentation from the Powell database.
- Maintain a clean, safe workspace while supporting internal and external customers with troubleshooting.
Who you'll work with
You will report to the Breaker Department Manager and partner closely with Project Management, Sales, and Quality Assurance teams.
What you bring
- High School Diploma or GED (preferred).
- 4 years of experience in a similar role.
- Solid understanding of basic electrical theory, safety practices, and real-world applications.
- Computer proficiency: Oracle, MS Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Hands-on capability with test equipment: Hi-Potential test set, insulation resistance tester, multimeter, and dial calipers.
- Comfort with hand tools and strong mechanical aptitude.
- Clear verbal and written communication; problem-solving ability preferred.
