The Assistant Controller plays a key leadership role in the day‑to‑day operations of Post & Schell, P.C.’s Accounting Department. This position partners closely with the Chief Financial Officer to ensure the firm’s financial operations are accurate, compliant, and strategically aligned. The ideal candidate is a hands‑on accounting professional with strong technical expertise, leadership capabilities, and a proactive mindset.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and oversee daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, payroll, and general ledger functions
- Supervise general ledger activities and ensure the accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of financial records
- Prepare, review, and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Produce monthly reporting packages, including key performance indicators (KPIs), financial results, and variance analyses
- Assist with year‑end financial audit activities and serve as a key audit liaison
- Investigate, analyze, and resolve financial discrepancies and variances
- Support the annual budgeting and forecasting processes
- Provide analytical, forecasting, reporting, and project support to the CFO and senior leadership
- Perform ad hoc analyses and special projects as requested by the CFO or senior management
- Oversee firm financial accounts, including bank, trust, and IOLTA accounts
- Oversee pension, profit‑sharing, and 401(k) plans, including employee deductions and loan activity
- Audit semi‑monthly payrolls and bonus payrolls for accuracy and compliance
- Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff, providing technical guidance and leadership
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA or MBA preferred
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including demonstrated supervisory experience
- Prior law firm or professional services firm experience strongly preferred
- Strong analytical, financial, and problem‑solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proven leadership ability with a results‑driven approach
- Experience with financial systems such as Elite 3E, ADP Workforce Now, Power BI, Xcelerate budgeting software, and advanced Microsoft Excel
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast‑paced environment
- Exceptional organizational and time‑management skills
- Positive, “can‑do” attitude with a proactive and collaborative approach
Reporting Relationship
This position reports directly to the Firm’s Chief Financial Officer.
