Pittsburg State University is accepting applications for a Maintenance and Repair Worker. The primary function of the Maintenance and Repair Worker is to manage general repairs and other maintenance needs along with housekeeping tasks for Housing & Residence Life buildings, equipment, and other property.
Duties and Responsibilities of Position
30% Maintenance Duties and Support
- Perform maintenance tasks such as operating power tools, electrical instruments, repair and replace switches, receptacles, ballasts, photocells, light bulbs, tubes, exit lights, and basic plumbing parts and fixtures
- Troubleshoot and diagnose routine maintenance issues and escalate complex issues to appropriate personnel.
- Install, uninstall, and provide upkeep to signs, equipment and other fixtures
- Handle pressure washers, and other cleaning equipment to sanitize equipment and facilities
- Replace non-functional light bulbs and provide maintenance to electrical controls and switches
- Set-up, break-down, and sanitize facilities, furniture, and equipment for events
- Carry out safety inspections on emergency equipment
- Assist with preparing the campus for hazardous weather conditions
- Work overtime when needed and be available for after-hours emergency call-ins
- Other miscellaneous duties as needed
30% Clean public areas
- Daily cleaning of all public areas in housing facilities, including the community room, office area, community kitchen, lobby area, public restrooms, hallways, laundry rooms and other public areas as specified in facilities.
- Vacuum rug daily and spot cleaned as needed. Other floor surfaces are cleaned daily; mopped or swept.
- Clean windows, as needed.
- Dust and polish furniture; clean kitchen area daily including the stove, microwave, sinks and floors.
- Empty and clean wastebaskets daily; clean and disinfect drinking fountain daily.
- Remove black marks from floors and walls daily; damp mop or vacuum office area and entrance to lobby as needed.
- Clean laundry rooms, including washers and dryers inside and out. Clean dryer filters.
- Clean basement and recreation areas, kitchens, and utility rooms, including keeping supplies neat and well stocked.
- Maintain cleaning tools and supplies in designated areas.
- Dust mop or vacuum halls daily, spot clean hallway and lounge carpet; damp mop spills, wax floors as needed, shampoo carpets as needed.
- Spot clean walls, clean doors and door glass.
- Strip and wax floors as needed in any area.
- Turn in work orders for maintenance daily; report damages to Area Coordinator, supervisor and complete incident reports.
- Clean interior and exterior stairs, stairwells, patios or breezeways, which are swept or dust mopped daily and wet-mopped at least once each week or more often if needed.
- Vacuum walk off mats at entrances.
- Spot clean stairway walls. Stair or breezeway handrails and windowsills are dusted daily.
- Clean windows on stairs, patios, washed as needed.
- Clean area outside of entrance, include cleaning outdoor mats, porch area, trash from entrance, clean outside doors.
- Maintain outside areas to sidewalks in all seasons, including cleaning snow and ice from these areas
10% Clean bathrooms
- Daily cleaning of public bathroom and all areas related to bathroom.
- Clean and fill soap dish and dispenser daily.
- Clean hand dryers daily.
- Sweep, scrub and disinfect floors daily.
- Clean restroom walls daily and deep cleaned once each week or as needed.
- Empty trash and sanitary napkin disposal containers and replace liners daily.
- Replenish toilet tissue daily.
- Clean doors/stalls to include handles and brass or other faceplates.
15% Clean student rooms/apartments
- Clean student rooms and apartments throughout the year. This includes cleaning all surfaces in the rooms or apartments; floors, walls, furniture, closets, blinds, windows, screens, etc. in preparation for a student to occupy a space.
- At the close of each semester, assist with the cleaning of all buildings, student rooms and apartments.
- Responsible for moving furniture and setting up rooms to appropriate layouts and specifications. Maintain security of equipment, supplies, keys, and student property when working in student space.
- Wash and dry Housing & Residence Life linens and bath items.
- Assist in cleaning the family student apartments throughout the year. This is a thorough general cleaning. Everything in the apartment is cleaned including walls (clean and remove tape etc.), floors, blinds, kitchen, and bathrooms.
- During the summer, clean student rooms, apartments and work to have the entire buildings cleaned and ready for the fall semester.
- Thoroughly clean student rooms and apartments to include windows, cabinets, drawers, mattresses, springs, furniture, and stripping, scrubbing, and waxing of floors.
- Complete cleaning tasks within established schedules and deadlines.
- Follow cleaning schedule for each apartment and/or clean bathrooms and kitchen areas to the above specifications as specified in routine schedule.
15% Inventory/Other Duties As Assigned
- Ensure proper cleaning supplies are on hand; maintain custodial closets for building supplies; keep storage areas clean of unneeded items. Report to supervisor when items need to be re-ordered.
- Handle cleaning supplies in safe manner; attend training sessions and meetings as requested; report incidents or damages to appropriate personnel.
- Assist in stocking buildings with supplies for housekeepers
- Assist with moving furniture and setting up rooms to appropriate layouts and specifications
- Participate in the cleaning of on campus housing facilities upon request, including during summer camps and conference transitions
- Monitor trash dumpsters and assist with clean-up
- Assist with snow/ice removal as determined by supervisor/housing leadership
Education and Experience – Required at Hire and Preferred
Required Education and Experience at Hire -
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Two years of related maintenance and repair experience
- Prior experience operating equipment

Job Type: University Support Staff
Appointment Duration: 12 months
Work Schedule: Full Time – Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.
Salary Range: Grade 5, $16.11 - $21.18 per hour
