POSITION SUMMARY
The Competition Operations Manager for the Pikes Peak Hill Climb (PPHC) is responsible for overseeing the on-mountain operational aspects of the race and managing competition-related logistics. The role requires managing a wide range of responsibilities, including on-mountain planning, set-up, and competition operations.
The Competition Operations Manager will work closely with the VP Operations & Competition and Race Director to ensure seamless communication and coordination between all involved parties.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT
- Oversee the planning and execution of tech day and race day operations, ensuring all elements of the events, including logistics, timing, signage, pit areas, and spectator zones, are set up and operational on schedule.
- Coordinate with vendors and contractors for services such as course preparation, safety / spectator barriers, and other operational needs.
- Manage movement, parking, staging areas, and the transport of materials and equipment to and from the course.
- Supervise race day operations, ensuring that all personnel (including volunteers, security, and race officials) are in their proper positions and carrying out their responsibilities effectively.
- Maintain clear and efficient communication between all operational teams, providing timely updates and resolving any issues that may arise during the event.
- Oversee management of organization’s fleet
- Contribute productively and positively to the Operations team, including staff, contractors, and interns – on and off the mountain.
COMPETITION MANAGEMENT
- Assist in managing competitor registration and entry process, ensuring that all necessary documentation is collected, including vehicle specifications, driver details, and waivers.
- Coordinate the competition schedule, making sure that drivers are briefed on race protocols, start times, and course rules.
- Work closely with the Race Director and officials to oversee the enforcement of competition rules and regulations, ensuring a fair and competitive event.
- Ensure that all competitors are provided with necessary support, including pre-race meetings, access to the race course for practice runs, and any specific requirements or accommodations.
- Monitor the race day environment for any issues that may affect the competition, including weather-related delays, course conditions, or safety concerns.
SAFETY AND RISK MANAGEMENT
- Collaborate with the Race Director & CEO to implement safety measures across the racecourse, ensuring the safety of all participants, staff, volunteers, and spectators.
- Assist in the planning and execution of emergency response protocols, ensuring that all teams are trained and prepared for any potential incidents.
- Ensure safety standards and protocols are met, including race course inspections, safety equipment deployment, and coordination with emergency response teams.
POST-EVENT OPERATIONS
- Assist with the teardown and breakdown of race-day infrastructure, ensuring that all equipment is returned, debris is cleared, and the course is restored to its pre-event condition.
- Gather feedback from staff, participants, vendors, and stakeholders to improve future events.
- Prepare post-event reports, documenting any challenges encountered during the race, the operational success, and areas for improvement.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
- (Preferred) Bachelor's degree in Event Management, Sports Management, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in event operations or motorsports, demonstrating experience in overseeing event logistics and competition management.
- Experience in motorsports events, especially in competitive racing environments, is highly desirable.
- Experience in coordinating large-scale events, managing teams, and handling high-pressure situations.
SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
- Strong organizational and leadership skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to interact effectively with race teams, officials, volunteers, vendors, and other stakeholders.
- Problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to make quick decisions during high-stress situations.
- Knowledge of motorsport competition rules and regulations or a strong passion to learn these skills.
- Attention to detail, ensuring that all operational and competition-related tasks are executed efficiently and accurately.
TECHNICAL SKILLS
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to manage complex event logistics.

MISC REQUIREMENTS:
- To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to lift (a minimum of 50 pounds), stand and sit. May work in an office environment or in environments exposed to the elements for outdoor events.
- Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record for the purpose of onsite work at various events.
- Comfortable working at altitude for extended periods of time and driving on Pikes Peak Highway.
- Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and extended hours during race season.
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
- Salary range: $50,000 - $60,000 depending upon qualifications and experience
