Position summary
The Nursing Assistant performs a variety of direct patient care activities and related non-professional services to meet the personal needs and comfort of patients in a healing environment. The role supports safe, respectful, and age-appropriate care for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients in collaboration with the nursing team.
Key responsibilities
- Perform vital signs and activities of daily living (ADLs) as outlined in the plan of care, including hygiene, bathing, grooming, toileting, and mobility support.
- Assist with hourly rounding, promptly respond to call lights/alarms, and document care according to policies, protocols, and procedures.
- Meet patient nutrition needs by delivering meals, setting up trays and adaptive equipment, assisting with feeding, distributing nourishments, and honoring patient choices.
- Maintain patient comfort and safety by turning and positioning patients, providing basic skin care, using low beds and floor mats appropriately, and following fall-prevention measures.
- Support rehabilitation needs including range of motion (ROM), ambulation, transfers, body alignment, and safe use of assistive devices; document rehabilitation activities per guidelines.
- Observe and identify changes in patients’ physical and emotional status and report changes promptly to the nurse; participate appropriately in shift handoff with complete and relevant information.
- Demonstrate behaviors consistent with a healing environment, including professionalism, effective communication, respect, and attention to a safe and therapeutic setting.
Qualifications
- Education:
- Minimum of high school graduate or equivalent.
- Post-secondary education in Health or Human Services preferred.
- Experience:
- 1–2 years of customer service and/or health-related experience required.
- Certifications:
- Current BLS certification through AHA or RQI only (required).
Skills and competencies
- Strong interpersonal skills with clear customer service and patient-centered focus.
- Computer literacy and ability to document accurately in electronic or paper systems.
- Basic knowledge of healthcare environment and the nursing assistant role; entry-level support position requiring solid basic skills and reliability.
- Ability to understand principles of growth and development across the lifespan and to recognize age-specific patient needs.
Work environment and safety
- Care is provided under the direction of a registered nurse and within organizational policies and procedures.
- Occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens is reasonably anticipated; role includes potential contact with blood, body fluids, or tissues while following standard precautions and infection control practices.
Schedule and status
- Status: Full-time, 36 hours per week (3x12-hour shifts).
- Schedule: Every other weekend and holiday required.
