Title: Production Manager (Electro-Mechanical Manufacturing)

Location: Phoenix, AZ

Position Overview

The Production Manager oversees daily manufacturing operations for complex electro-mechanical products, ensuring production plans are executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established quality and schedule requirements.

This hands-on leadership role maintains a strong presence on the manufacturing floor, coordinating technicians, materials, equipment, documentation, and cross-functional resources to keep production moving and address constraints. The Production Manager partners with Production leadership, Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, Operations, and other teams to improve processes, develop technicians, and support new product introductions and production ramps.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct daily manufacturing activities, including assembly, integration, testing, calibration, burn-in, environmental screening, packaging, and final inspection as applicable.
  • Translate production priorities and program requirements into daily and weekly work plans, balancing staffing and resources to meet quality, throughput, and delivery objectives.
  • Monitor work-in-process, material availability, equipment readiness, staffing, and schedule risks; coordinate with cross-functional teams to resolve or escalate production constraints.
  • Ensure technicians follow approved standard work, assembly instructions, test procedures, inspection criteria, safety requirements, and configuration-controlled documentation.
  • Maintain accurate production records, traceability information, test results, labor reporting, work-order status, and training documentation within applicable systems.
  • Track key manufacturing indicators such as first-pass yield, defects, rework, scrap, downtime, cycle time, throughput, and work-in-process to identify recurring issues and improvement opportunities.
  • Participate in root-cause investigations, corrective and preventive actions (CAPA), nonconformance reviews, and process audits while promoting defect prevention and product quality.
  • Lead continuous improvement efforts using practices such as 5S, Kaizen, error-proofing, visual management, and workflow optimization while maintaining a safe and organized production environment.
  • Supervise, coach, and develop production technicians, including onboarding, cross-training, qualification tracking, shift coverage, and hands-on guidance in assembly, testing, calibration, troubleshooting, and equipment use.
  • Support prototype builds, new product introductions, engineering changes, process qualification, and production transfers or ramps.
  • Partner with Engineering and other technical teams to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, optical, and control-system issues and provide manufacturing feedback related to manufacturability, testability, tooling, fixtures, and serviceability.
  • Support the implementation and improvement of production tooling, fixtures, test equipment, inspection equipment, workstations, and manufacturing documentation.
  • Lead production meetings and communicate schedule status, staffing needs, quality or safety concerns, operational constraints, and improvement activities to relevant stakeholders.
  • Support compliance with applicable safety, environmental, regulatory, and quality-system requirements.
  • Maintain regular onsite presence within the manufacturing environment and provide schedule flexibility or occasional off-hours support during critical production periods.
  • Travel occasionally as needed for training, supplier coordination, or production support.

Qualifications

  • 5 years of experience in manufacturing, production, assembly, testing, or a related technical operations environment.
  • 2 years of experience leading, supervising, or coordinating technicians or production personnel.
  • Experience working in a low-volume, high-mix, high-reliability manufacturing environment.
  • Working knowledge of production scheduling, standard work, process documentation, quality systems, and continuous improvement practices.
  • Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, assembly documentation, test procedures, and engineering change information.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot manufacturing issues, identify root causes, and coordinate corrective actions.
  • Strong organizational, communication, prioritization, leadership, and team-development skills.
  • Proficiency with standard office applications and the ability to learn ERP, MES, quality, and production tracking systems.
  • Ability to work onsite, remain actively engaged on the production floor, and adapt to changing manufacturing priorities.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience manufacturing complex electro-mechanical products.
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in manufacturing, engineering, electronics, mechanical technology, or a related discipline; equivalent technical experience may be considered.
  • Experience with electro-optical, photonics, imaging, infrared, sensor, aerospace, defense, or other precision products.
  • Experience with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, 5S, Kaizen, value-stream mapping, or similar continuous improvement methods.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001, AS9100, MIL-STD, EHS, or other applicable quality and safety requirements.
  • Experience with production testing, calibration, environmental screening, burn-in, or final acceptance processes.
  • Experience supporting contract manufacturers, suppliers, or outsourced production activities.
