SALARY: $14.00/hour, Temporary PT

ROLE & LEVEL/GRADE: A2 / 2

SUMMARY:

Integrated Marine Program And College Training (IMPACT), is an Upward Bound Math and Science Center (UBMS) funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Its goal is to support underserved local youth in their pursuit of careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. To do so, the museum recruits top-notch students from Title 1 schools throughout Miami-Dade County and provides them with immersive learning and professional development experiences for all four years of high-school.

During the academic year, IMPACT hires Mentors to design and facilitate courses, delivered to students on Saturdays, based in science and math. The courses offered are developed in collaboration with program staff and community partners, and they leverage a selected Mentor’s content expertise. With the support of program staff, they may also lead off-site excursions. In addition to providing a robust background in a particular math/science topic, successful mentors also possess strong problem-solving skills, a team spirit and the desire to positively influence our students.

  • 4 hour training (September 22nd - September 26th, will select time based on candidate's availability)
  • Must have full availability on Saturdays for 30 weeks
  • Program will run September 22, 2025 - May 16, 2026

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • In collaboration with program staff and community partners, Mentors must design and facilitate a science and/or math course involving hands-on activities and project-based learning.
  • Communicate classroom and preparation needs with program staff in a timely manner.
  • Serve as a mentor/role model to the special needs of underserved high school youth.
  • Help students produce and present projects to demonstrate their acquired science knowledge.
  • Ensure students’ safety during all activities.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), or in the late stages of obtaining said degree (Junior or Senior).
  • Minimum 2 years of teaching experience, either in formal or informal settings.
  • Minimum 2 years of mentoring/coaching experience, preferably with culturally-diverse, underserved student populations.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Must have a strong background in the particular math/science subject he/she plans to teach. General scientific literacy is expected as well.
  • Must have a friendly, personable, and enthusiastic demeanor toward all; embracing the multicultural differences of our students and staff is essential
  • Communicate well with students as well as coordinating staff and other mentors.
  • Provide a positive and fun working environment.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills. Bilingual ability—English/Spanish, English/Haitian-Creole—preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:

  • Work is normally performed indoors with some event-based tasks conducted in an outdoor setting; exposure to climatic conditions is to be expected.
  • Exposure to physical risk is primarily that of an outdoor environment, such as sunburn, mosquito bites, etc.
  • Moderate to active physical effort can be expected as it relates to the set-up and tear-down of program spaces.

CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Level 2 criminal background check clearance as required by the Florida State Department of Children & Families.

  • Drug screening as part of the Drug Free Workplace Program.
