ROLE & LEVEL/GRADE: T3/4

SUMMARY:

Under minimum supervision the Exhibit Technician III performs installation of new exhibits, daily maintenance and reviews the safe operation of the new Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science exhibits. She/he works collaboratively with other technicians and management staff from both internal and external crews. Work involves a variety of duties other than those of skilled craft workers, with attention to knowing and using safe work practices. This position also supports the successful completion of after-hours and weekend events by assisting with the set up the spaces.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform all functions as delineated on the Exhibit Technician I, and Exhibit Technician II job description.
  • Execute a daily task list for all portions of the museum. These activities include installation, repairs and upkeep of exhibit components, painting, cleaning, and attention to all aspects of the exhibition floor, including lighting.
  • Performs and participate in exhibit and building projects including general prototyping, fabrication, and installation.
  • Adhere to the established policies and procedures of the Museum.
  • Operate all the Exhibits, performing skilled maintenance and repair on electronic, electric, mechanical components.
  • Assist in the installation and breakdown of traveling and permanent exhibits, including the loading/unloading of tractor-trailers with forklifts and other common equipment (i.e. personnel lifts, dollies, Johnson bars, lift gates etc.).
  • Rigging: ability to work safely performing rigging to install light fixtures, electric drops, graphic, projectors, screens, and any other component required to complete permanent and temporary exhibits.
  • Furniture: able to assembly, paint, touch up, and install existent and new furniture.
  • Maintain the work environment of the Exhibit Shop and loading areas including the condition of all tools necessary to the job and efficient storage of all materials necessary to production.
  • Maintain shop and work areas organized, clean, well lit, and free of unnecessary items.
  • Performs skilled troubleshooting and repairs to electronic or mechanical devices.
  • Maintain museum lighting and assist with lighting installations.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies such as lumber, plastics, paints, light bulbs etc.
  • Interact with the museum visitors and act as a facilitator for program activities related to “making”.
  • Must be able to work self-sufficiently with little supervision in support of after-hours and weekend events.
  • Maintain diary entries regarding history of all exhibits. Maintain exhibit files and records relative to maintenance and safety of individual exhibits.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Ability to work safely.
  • Ability to follow directions, instructions, structured process, and procedures, and to complete tasks.
  • Customer service skills to act responsively to customer inquiries and requests; and escalate the more difficult matters appropriately.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Vocational / technical school preferred.
  • Working knowledge of tools of trade (including welding equipment, paint equipment, shop machines and power tools) preferred.
  • Willingness to work a prior-established schedule including weekends and evenings when needed.
  • Bilingual preferred (Spanish/English/Creole)
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in the safe use of designated tools.
  • Familiar with the application of electronic exhibit mechanisms, such as audio/video systems, specialized lighting instruments, theatrical effects lighting etc.
  • Ability to retrieve and read email.
  • Ability to work independently for short periods and without immediate supervision.
