Job Title: Academic Mentor

SUMMARY

Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) is a federally funded program at the Frost Science Museum designed to equip students from Miami-Dade County’s Title 1 schools with the tools and knowledge necessary for college success and STEM careers. Our program provides a comprehensive four-year experience that combines academic support, college counseling, and immersive STEM learning opportunities. By providing these resources and experiences, UBMS aims to inspire and prepare students to excel in higher education and pursue fulfilling careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

During the academic year, UBMS will be hiring an academic advisor/mentor to support students in achieving their educational goals. This role involves attending Saturday sessions throughout the year to provide academic counseling, tutoring, and assistance with college applications. The ideal candidate will work closely with program staff to deliver engaging workshops and will need strong problem-solving skills to address student challenges. A passion for mentoring and a collaborative, team-oriented approach are essential for success in this position.

Training week: September 22-26, 2025

Must have full availability on Saturdays for 30 weeks (about 7 months) (October 4, 2025- May 16, 2026)

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain detailed records of student academic performance, including grades, attendance, and course enrollment.

  • Provide individualized tutoring sessions in 9th to 12th grade core subjects.

  • Conduct workshops and one-on-one advising sessions on college application processes, standardized tests, financial aid, and career exploration.

  • Assist students in identifying and applying for scholarships, grants, and other financial aid opportunities.

  • Research and connect students with relevant academic, social, and community resources to support their overall development.

  • Offer ongoing academic and personal counseling to help students overcome challenges and achieve their goals.

  • Maintain comprehensive student records, including academic performance, standardized test scores (ACT/SAT), scholarship applications, and college application progress.

  • Actively participate in biweekly staff meetings.

  • Required to participate in a mandatory overnight camping trip in January or February to foster strong relationships with students.

  • Strongly encouraged to attend college campus tours during the week. Flexibility is provided for work or school conflicts.

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), or in the late stages of obtaining said degree (Junior or Senior).

  • Minimum 2 years of teaching experience, either in formal or informal settings.

  • Minimum 2 years of mentoring/coaching experience, preferably with diverse student populations.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong academic background with the ability to provide effective tutoring and academic support in core high school subjects.

  • Proven ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with students from diverse backgrounds, fostering a supportive and encouraging environment.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills to efficiently manage student records, deadlines, and multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Proficiency in utilizing technology for student data management, communication, and research.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with students, parents, and colleagues.

  • Knowledge of college admissions processes, financial aid, and scholarship opportunities.

  • Ability to conduct workshops and deliver presentations on various topics related to college readiness and success.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving and critical thinking skills to address student challenges and find effective solutions.

  • Passion for working with underserved youth and a commitment to their academic and personal growth.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Preferred: Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish, or English and Haitian Creole.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:

  • Work is normally performed indoors with some event-based tasks conducted in an outdoor setting; exposure to climatic conditions is to be expected.

  • Exposure to physical risk is primarily that of an outdoor environment, such as sunburn, mosquito bites, etc.

  • Moderate to active physical effort can be expected as it relates to the set-up and tear-down of program spaces.

CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Level 2 background clearance as defined by the Florida Statutes/law

  • Drug screening as part of the Drug Free Workplace Program.
