After Camp Recreation Counselor Job Summary
The After Camp Rec Counselor role is responsible for overseeing an assigned group of 8-10 children each day to create projects, lead games, and supervise campers in scheduled weekly activities. Weekly activities may include, but are not limited to, sports and games, free swim, beach visits, other outside activities, and chaperoning field trips. Candidates must be at least sixteen (16) years of age or older by the start date.
Recreation Programs Division summer camps include full-day childcare, general-interest day camp, and specialty (art, theatre, dance, sports) day camps. Based on the needs, supervisory staff will assign camp placement based on counselor preference and availability. Additional questions within the application process will be used to assist with the camp placement process.
This camp runs for ten (10) consecutive weeks from June 8 – August 14. Candidates must be available to work Monday through Friday from 2:15- 6:15 p.m. for the duration of the camp. After Camp Rec serves children in kindergarten through 8th grade and hosts three locations, including the Community Recreation Center, Gillson/Lakeview Center, and District 39 Elementary/Jr. High School (TBD).

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Maintain good communication with parents, children, and Park District staff
-
Actively support the agency’s risk management protocol that will effectively control and reduce accidents
-
Obey the practical safety rules, regulations, and procedures established by the Safety Committee
-
Promptly report all unsafe actions, practices, or conditions to the immediate supervisor
-
Perform other related duties as assigned based on agency needs
-
Become familiar with safety procedures, including, but not limited to, fire, severe weather and evacuation procedures
-
Prepare incident reports when needed
-
Responsible for the care and upkeep of all camp equipment
-
Maintain the safety of campers at all times
-
Attend and participate in required safety training
-
Supervise campers at the camp site, create and implement weekly lesson plans, and prepare materials for distribution
-
Responsible for administering minor first aid if needed
-
Attend all camp orientation sessions and work the full nine weeks of the camp session
-
Responsible for the safe arrival and dismissal of campers
-
Adhere to a complete curriculum set by the camp director

Follow through with all other duties as assigned by the Recreation Supervisor

Monitor the learn/play environment for safety hazards

Maintain close supervision of children when assisting in programs

Education and/or Experience:

Physical Requirements/Work Environment:

Ability to work in all climates and weather

Must be comfortable getting into a large body of water if applicable

Tolerate a moderate to high noise level at times
