POSITION SUMMARY

The ASD Program Consultant provides direct support and consultation for our Livingston ESA center-based programs located at Pathway School.  This position is pivotal in supporting special education teachers, students, and families in the implementation of evidenced based strategies to improve outcomes for students on the Autism Spectrum.

  • Supports START and evidence-based initiatives by providing training, coaching, and other supports as requested to ensure implementation fidelity.
  • Enthusiasm and flexibility to provide consultation to educational personnel on behalf of students.
  • Experience supporting students with complex communication needs, including familiarity with Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) supports.
  • Participates regularly on teams to resolve problems and to analyze student-level data relative to children demonstrating learning and/or behavioral challenges.
  • Assists both general and special education staff to support students in their least restrictive environment (LRE).
  • Assist in proper referrals of students to agencies and specialists within the community.
  • Participate in regular professional learning opportunities to stay abreast of current research-based practices.
  • Actively participate as a local representative in the Livingston Educational Autism Network.
  • Support students and staff through school-based transitions.
  • Implement and monitor peer-to-peer programs within the local district

 

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

 

  • Master's degree in education or a field of study related to special education.
  • Minimum of three years satisfactory teaching experience, or at least five years of experience implementing research-based strategies for students on the Autism spectrum.
  • Training in START, Instructional Consultation Teams (or similar problem-solving model), and Project ImPACT preferred.
  • Experience training in one or more of the START modules preferred. Strong background and knowledge base of working with individuals with Autism

 

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Michigan teaching certificate with an endorsement in special education.
  • Teacher Consultant eligibility preferred. Candidates with certification in a related special education field and a minimum of five years of working with students with Autism will also be considered.
  • Non-teacher certification candidates must be in compliance with certification requirements for specific disciplines per Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) rules and regulations as well as any additional approval requirements in order to maintain professional licensure.

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and/or ABILITIES

REQUIRED

  1. Strong verbal communication skills.
  2. Ability to remain confidential when exposed to sensitive information.
  3. Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team and demonstrate flexibility A minimum of 1-year of experience.

PREFERRED

  1. Knowledge of school districts and community.
  2. Experience working with Head Start/Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) families.
  3. CPR certified.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit use hands to finger, handle, or feel; talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and is a standard acceptable level for this environment. Is directly responsibility for student safety, work output and well-being.

The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment.
