About the role:
The Senior Cost Accountant is a key member of the Cost Accounting team, responsible for leading cost accounting operations, driving process improvements, and delivering actionable financial insights across the organization. This role owns product costing, variance analysis, inventory valuation, and month-end close activities, while also serving as a subject-matter expert and resource for junior staff. The position reports to the Director of Cost Accounting and partners closely with Operations, Supply Chain, and FP&A.
The ideal candidate brings deep CPG manufacturing experience, strong ERP proficiency, and an analytical mindset to translate complex cost data into business decisions. This is a high-visibility role requiring both technical depth and the ability to communicate clearly with cross-functional stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Cost Accounting & Inventory Management
• Own end-to-end product costing, including standard cost development, BOM maintenance, overhead rate calculations, and periodic cost roll-ups
• Lead month-end close for cost accounting and inventory, including journal entries, GL reconciliations, and COGS reporting
• Maintain and enhance the inventory Excess & Obsolescence (E&O) subledger; drive timely write-off decisions with cross-functional input
• Oversee production order management within the ERP system, ensuring accuracy and completeness of manufacturing inputs
• Prepare and review cost adjustment transactions and inventory reconciliations
Variance Analysis & Reporting
• Perform in-depth variance analysis (purchase price, labor, overhead, yield) and present findings with root-cause commentary to Operations and Finance leadership
• Track and report average cost variability; identify trends and anomalies and escalate appropriately
• Develop and maintain cost reporting dashboards and ad hoc analyses to support business decisions
• Support pricing decisions, margin analysis, and new product costing for innovation and renovation projects
Process Improvement & Cross-Functional Partnership
• Identify and lead cost accounting process improvement initiatives; drive standardization and automation across the team
• Partner with Operations, Supply Chain, and Procurement to monitor co-manufacturer tolling rates, contract compliance, and cost modeling
• Collaborate with FP&A on budget and forecast inputs related to COGS, inventory, and overhead rates
• Serve as the cost accounting liaison during internal and external audits; prepare and review audit schedules and respond to auditor inquiries
Team Leadership & Development
• Mentor and provide day-to-day guidance to junior cost accounting staff
• Act as ERP subject matter expert for cost accounting modules; support system implementations, upgrades, and user training
• Contribute to the development of departmental policies, procedures, and internal controls
Qualifications
Required
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• 5 years of progressive cost accounting experience, with a demonstrated track record in a manufacturing environment
• Strong working knowledge of GAAP, inventory valuation methodologies (standard and average costing), BOMs, work orders, and overhead allocation
• Experience with outsourced / contract manufacturing and co-manufacturer cost structures
• Proficiency in ERP systems; experience with mid-market platforms (NetSuite strongly preferred)
• Advanced Excel skills; ability to build and maintain complex models and reports
• Proven ability to manage competing priorities and deliver results in a fast-paced, evolving environment
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; comfortable presenting to cross-functional and senior audiences
Preferred
• CPA or CMA certification (strongly preferred)
• CPG or consumer goods manufacturing background
• Experience supporting ERP implementations or system migrations
• Familiarity with Power BI, Tableau, or similar data visualization tools
