Brooklyn, NY Full Time
POSTED ON 10/8/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 11/5/2026
Summary

READ 718 is a Brooklyn-based literacy nonprofit providing individualized, evidence-based literacy instruction to students in grades 3–8 who have fallen behind in reading and come from low-income households. We are committed to advancing educational equity and ensuring that Brooklyn children have access to the individualized literacy support they need to thrive.

Our immediate goal is for students to strengthen their reading skills and make meaningful progress toward reading at or above grade level. Our broader goal is to positively impact students’ long-term educational and life outcomes by building strong foundational literacy skills, confidence, and a love of reading.

Position Overview

The Program Manager will oversee the daily programming and operations of READ 718’s Boerum Hill literacy center (420 Atlantic Avenue), working closely with the Executive Director, program team, and Program Associate. This is a great opportunity for an educator who is excited to work directly with students, families, volunteers, and community partners in an out-of-school learning environment.

The Program Manager should be passionate about literacy education and educational equity and skilled at building strong relationships with children and adults. We are looking for someone who is organized, collaborative, flexible, solutions-oriented, and knowledgeable about literacy instruction.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; degree in Education or a related field strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of experience working in an educational or youth-serving setting.
  • Strong background in literacy instruction; experience or advanced training as a Reading or Literacy Specialist is strongly preferred.
  • Experience administering reading assessments and using assessment data to inform individualized instruction and lesson planning.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain strong systems in a fast-paced, community-based environment.
  • Experience working collaboratively with families, educators, volunteers, and/or community partners.
  • Commitment to educational equity and supporting students from historically underserved communities.
  • Positive, flexible, and solutions-oriented approach to challenges.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating closely with a small team.
  • Eagerness to take ownership, contribute ideas, and grow with READ 718.

Duties

  • Oversee programming and day-to-day operations at READ 718’s Boerum Hill literacy center, including after-school tutoring, READ Up, the Saturday READing Room, and seasonal programming.
  • Recruit, train, support, and engage volunteer tutors who provide individualized literacy instruction to students.
  • Recruit eligible students and work with families to maintain strong enrollment and participation each program cycle.
  • Schedule and conduct student assessments and family intake meetings and develop student literacy profiles.
  • Use READ 718’s curriculum and assessment data to develop individualized lesson plans based on each student’s strengths and areas for growth.
  • Review tutor feedback and regularly update student lesson plans, instructional materials, and texts to respond to student progress.
  • Maintain consistent and thoughtful communication with families, teachers, volunteers, and other stakeholders supporting students.
  • Support the development and implementation of workshops and engagement opportunities for families, educators, volunteers, and community members.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with local schools and community-based organizations to strengthen student recruitment, family engagement, and community connections.
  • Contribute to ongoing curriculum development and continuous improvement of READ 718’s literacy programming.
  • Support program evaluation, student progress monitoring, and accurate data management using Salesforce and other organizational systems.
  • Create opportunities to build community among students, families, volunteers, and staff.
  • Manage the Boerum Hill space, including maintaining an organized and welcoming literacy center and ensuring appropriate books, instructional materials, and supplies are available.
