What You'll Do
As a project engineer, the candidate will be responsible for managing complex, multi-discipline engineering services (both internal and subcontracted) and component or bulk material procurements in support of projects. May be assigned to support a specific plant organization for all its engineering needs, including projects and minor non-project modifications and studies, and/or matrixed to a single or multiple project manager(s) for the engineering effort associated with capital or expense-funded activities. Ensures the Engineering organization’s performance of the established scope of work and directs development, maintenance, and execution of a project/task technical work scope within budget and schedule. Approves all design deliverables and ensures that all technical input requirements are considered and incorporated, and that reviews for constructability, acceptability, operability, maintainability, and safety are performed.
Project Engineering Management: Take ownership of the engineering aspects of assigned projects, overseeing internal engineering teams and managing subcontracted engineering services. Ensure alignment with project objectives, scope, and quality standards.
Primary Engineering Contact and Team Lead: Serve as the primary point of contact for the engineering organization regarding assigned projects. Lead, guide, and mentor the engineering team assigned to the project, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment.
Design Authority Representative: Act as the designated design authority representative for assigned projects, ensuring that all design decisions comply with applicable codes, standards, regulations, and company policies. Uphold the technical integrity and safety of all designs.
Authoring Scope and Planning Documentation: Develop and author comprehensive engineering scope documents, schedules, work plans, and other foundational planning documentation to clearly define project objectives, deliverables, and methodologies.
Budget and Schedule Oversight: Monitor and control the engineering work scope to ensure performance within allocated budgets and established project schedules. Proactively identify and address potential delays or cost overruns.
Technical Deliverable Approval: Review and approve all engineering design deliverables, confirming that all technical input requirements have been thoroughly incorporated. Verify adherence to relevant codes, standards, and best practices.
Design Review and Optimization: Lead and facilitate comprehensive technical reviews for constructability, operational efficiency, long-term maintainability, safety, and overall acceptability of designs. Identify and implement opportunities for optimization.
Stakeholder Coordination: Collaborate effectively with project managers, procurement, construction teams, operations, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure seamless integration of engineering activities within the broader project lifecycle.
Technical Support During Construction: Provide expert technical guidance and support to construction teams, addressing engineering-related queries and issues. This includes processing construction support documentation such as submittals, field change requests, and non-conformance reports, and managing the engineering change control process in coordination with project management.
Cross-Functional Support: Depending on organizational needs, the Project Engineer may be assigned to provide comprehensive engineering support to a specific plant organization for all its engineering needs (modifications, studies) or be matrixed to project managers for specific capital or expense-funded initiatives.
What You Can Expect
In addition to the above requirements, the applicant must also meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e. Baccalaureate in engineering or related science, 2 years job-related and at least 1 year nuclear expereince, or a DOE O 426.2A alternative). DOE O 426.2A experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities. Preferred Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or related discipline from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited program in the United States or designated equivalents thru ABET Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRA)
- A minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) is preferred for up to four years post-graduation, confirmed by transcript at the time of offer. Beyond four years from graduation, relevant experience will supersede GPA in hiring considerations.
- Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0/4.0 cumulative GPA
- Master’s degree with a minimum 3.3/4.0 cumulative GPA
- PhD with a minimum 3.5/4.0 cumulative GPA
- Minumum 5 years of progressive experience in project engineering, preferably within infrastructure, industrial, or complex facility projects.
- Proven ability to manage multi-discipline engineering projects, including scope definition, schedule management, and budget control.
- Strong understanding of engineering design principles, technical specifications, and industry best practices.
- Experience with conducting and facilitating design reviews, including constructability, operability, and maintainability assessments.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex technical information to diverse audiences.
- Proficiency in relevant engineering software and project management tools.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Professional Engineer (PE) or Registered Architecture (RA) license is desirable.
