The Academic Advisor provides holistic, student-centered academic advising for undergraduate students pursuing degrees in performing arts disciplines. This role supports both first-year and upper-level students from entry through graduation, guiding them through academic planning, registration, and campus engagement. The advisor plays a key role in advancing student success, retention, and progression by offering proactive, individualized support and helping students align their academic experiences with their personal and professional goals.
Position Duties
- Provide individualized academic advising to first-year and upper-level students on course selection, degree planning, and academic progress.
- Assist incoming first-year students during orientation and onboarding, including schedule development and transition support.
- Monitor academic standing and progression, identifying at-risk students and coordinating interventions or success plans as needed.
- Collaborate with program faculty and leadership to ensure advising practices are aligned with curricular and performance-based program requirements.
- Support students in navigating minors, cocurricular opportunities, experiential learning, and graduate/professional preparation.
- Participate in recruitment, yield, and orientation events, including occasional evening or weekend commitments.
- Maintain accurate and timely advising records in student information systems.
- Refer students to campus resources such as tutoring, counseling, financial aid, and career services.
- Engage in ongoing assessment and improvement of advising strategies and student outcomes.
- Participate in regular advising meetings, professional development, and university student success initiatives.
- Performs other such duties as may be assigned from time to time.
Work Hours
Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., with additional hours as needed.
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, student affairs, or related field preferred.
- Minimum of one year of experience in academic advising or student support roles in higher education.
- Understanding of the academic and developmental needs of performing arts students is strongly preferred.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to build rapport with students from diverse backgrounds and work collaboratively with faculty and staff.
- Familiarity with advising technologies (e.g., Banner, Degree Works, Starfish/OnTrack) preferred.
- Commitment to inclusive, equity-centered advising practices.
- Availability for some weekend or evening events related to recruitment or student engagement.
