The Academic Advisor provides holistic, equity-centered academic advising for undergraduate transfer and continuing students majoring in Social Science and Policy-related fields. This position supports student success, academic progression, and timely degree completion by building strong, developmental advising relationships and connecting students with appropriate university resources. The advisor collaborates with faculty, program staff, and student support offices to foster a supportive and engaging academic environment.
Position Duties
- Provide academic advising for transfer and continuing students in assigned majors from entry through graduation.
- Offer guidance on academic planning, degree requirements, course selection, and registration procedures.
- Conduct academic progress checks and audits; proactively address students who are off track.
- Support students facing academic challenges by developing individualized success plans and connecting them with appropriate support services.
- Interpret and explain university policies, procedures, and academic regulations.
- Participate in orientation, registration, recruitment, and conversion events, including occasional weekend or evening commitments.
- Collaborate with faculty and program staff to ensure alignment between advising and academic department goals.
- Maintain accurate records and case notes in student information and advising systems.
- Refer students to campus resources such as tutoring, counseling, financial aid, accessibility services, and career development.
- Contribute to advising-related initiatives, workshops, and retention strategies within the advising unit.
- Participate in university committees and working groups as assigned. Performs other such duties as may be assigned from time to time.
Work Hours
Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., with additional hours as needed.
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, student affairs, or a related field strongly preferred.
- At least one year of experience in academic advising, student support, or related roles in higher education.
- Strong understanding of academic advising principles and student development theory.
- Experience working with transfer and/or continuing student populations preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, and colleagues across a diverse institution.
