Firing Desk Operator/Safety

Summary
Works under general supervision of the Shift Leader who makes assignments from weekly range/live fire, special event schedules. The incumbent is available for advice and guidance on unusual or unprecedented problems encountered. Independently plans, organizes, and completes assignments within the framework of schedules, current policies, and regulations; evaluates performance through review, technical soundness of solutions achieved, and compliance with accepted safety policies and procedures.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Uses a wide variety of guides to perform assignments to include range control standard operating procedures (SOP), daily range schedule, Fort Rucker's regulations, surface danger zone (SDZs) overlays, daily instructions, safety procedures, published notices, Army maneuver tactics, aircraft operations, gunnery requirements, military ordnance, range layout, safety precautions, applicable environmental regulations, applicable field manuals, and training manuals.
- Uses significant judgment and interpretation to apply the guides to specific cases and adapt procedures to accommodate unusual or one-of-a-kind situations.
- Serves as a Range Safety on heavily used live-fire ranges and training areas for the Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization, and Security (DPTMS), Training Division. Monitors the issuance, opening, check fire, cease fire, and closing of all live fire ranges, artillery, and mortar firing points, training facilities, and training areas through operation/communications via multiple radio nets.
- Operates the Range Facility Management Support System (RFMSS) on a personal computer and local area network (LAN). Operates range operations radio net to control ranges and live fire maneuvers, monitor training areas, and provide instructions and advisory information to assist and preclude aircraft incursion into restricted air spaces.
- Provides continuous application of safety inspections of ranges, training areas, and training facilities.
- Assists in implementing prescribed procedures during emergencies that include MEDEVAC operations and weapons/ammunition malfunctions.
- Assists authorized users on use of ranges, training facilities, and maneuver areas for live fire, non-firing, and maneuver training. Reviews and compares the daily range schedule, unit OIC/RSO and weapons certification memoranda, SOPs, firing orders, on file Range Risk Assessments, SDZ overlays, firing data and diagrams, and barrier plans for direct and indirect live-fire and other training, to ensure completeness, prior to conducting site inspections.
- Operates Remote Computer Stations in support of automated ranges based upon unit scheduling. Performs manual tasks such as filling sandbags, replacing targets and target frames, string-trimming, and other like-type functions.
Minimum Requirements
- High School Diploma
- US Citizen
- Minimum three (3) years safety experience
- Ability to pass background investigation
- Ability to obtain security clearance
- Possess an understanding of military training requirements and live fire training events for a wide variety of Army military occupational specialties.
- Knowledge of weapons systems, range safety, and training to ensure safe operations, able to operate radio equipment
- Familiar with Range Facility Management Support System (RFMSS) preferred
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Possess a work ethic that includes neatness, punctuality, and accuracy; exhibit a professional, business-like appearance and demeanor
