Port Captain is a shoreside management role responsible for overseeing vessel operations, ensuring safety compliance, managing crew performance, and acting as the primary liaison between vessel crews, customers, and regulatory agencies. They handle scheduling, maintenance, and incident investigations for tugs and barges within their designated region.
Key Responsibilities
- Operations & Safety: Supervises offshore marine employees and ensures compliance with company safety policies (SMS), regulatory requirements (USCG, EPA), and maintenance programs.
- Personnel Management: Manages hiring, crewing, training, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions for vessel crewmembers.
- Logistics & Scheduling: Coordinates tug and barge utilization, schedules crew, and ensures efficient operations to meet client demands.
- Incident Investigation: Investigates marine incidents, including vessel damage, personal injuries, and spills, and implements corrective actions.
- Customer & External Relations: Interfaces with customers, pilots, and port officials to manage towing, docking, and special projects.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Experience: Requires a strong maritime background with experience in vessel operations, usually as a senior licensed officer.
- Licensing: Valid USCG Merchant Mariner Credential.
- Knowledge: Deep understanding of maritime regulations, towing operations, and safety protocols.
- Skills: Strong communication, leadership, and analytical skills for budgeting and scheduling.
