Job Description

General Functions:

Assist Traffic Engineering staff in daily traffic-related operations with an emphasis on public service, safety, and infrastructure support. Interns will be introduced to real-world applications of civil and traffic engineering and are expected to contribute to the team through technical, analytical, and field-based tasks. This role is a valuable opportunity for hands-on learning in a professional government setting.

Representative Duties/Assignments:

Produce work orders using Autodesk Civil 3D or Microsoft PowerPoint. Proficiency in at least one of these tools is required to visually communicate technical recommendations and generate basic plan markups.

Assist with fieldwork including sight distance evaluations, pedestrian safety observations, equipment deployment and retrieval (such as trailer-mounted speed radar feedback signs or traffic counters), and documentation for public infrastructure conditions.

Assist with crash diagram production using GIS tools or mapping software to support traffic safety studies.

Participate in traffic operations duties such as supporting crosswalk evaluations, school zone safety studies, traffic control device asset lookups, and interacting with county residents in person or over the phone.

Assist with Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) permit reviews by evaluating MOT plans for traffic-related roadway permits and performing basic data entry as part of the permitting process.

Work alongside engineers and technicians to gain exposure to traffic engineering principles and workflows.

Other duties as assigned in support of project development, citizen requests, or traffic studies.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent

Junior level standing or higher in Engineering or Technology bachelor's degree program

Preferences:

Preference will be given to degree majors in Civil Engineering

Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel and PowerPoint)

Prior exposure to or experience with CAD software or similar technical drawing platforms preferred

Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to follow through on assigned tasks

Pay Grade: 406 - From $16.40 to $16.95
