Job Description

General Functions

To perform medicolegal death investigations on cases falling under the jurisdiction of the Medical Examiner.

This is skilled, forensic medical investigative work under the direction of the Medical Examiner.

An employee in a position assigned to this class investigates reported deaths falling under the jurisdiction of the Medical Examiner. They gather facts, go to death scenes, take photographs, ensure the preservation and storage of evidence, arrange and coordinate for removal and transport of the body to morgue or designated facility, and prepare required reports.

Work is performed under the general supervision of a higher graded employee and is reviewed for conformance with established policies and procedures through reports and conferences.

Representative Duties/Assignments

  • Takes initial death reports and conducts initial investigation to determine if case falls under jurisdiction of the Medical Examiner.
  • Conducts complete investigation on those cases determined to fall under the jurisdiction of the Medical Examiner.
  • Investigates the death scene, takes responsibility of the deceased person, clothing on the body and any article on or near the deceased, which may aid the Medical Examiner in determining identification, and cause and manner of death.
  • Photographically documents the scene and body location and prepares sketches of body and its relationship to scene.
  • Makes preliminary examination of the body (in absence of the Medical Examiner) with reference to identification of factors related to determining time and cause of death.
  • Arranges for and coordinates transport of deceased to morgue, catalogue and file all related evidence.
  • Elicits pertinent past and present history from persons associated with deceased, including family, physicians, and law enforcement personnel.
  • Acts as official representative of Medical Examiner in record review, discussions and conferences with other agencies and in giving depositions and courtroom testimony.
  • Attends various training programs to maintain high standards and implement new methods of investigations.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school or equivalent and two years of investigative experience in death, law enforcement, or military investigation or a closely related field; or an Associate of Arts degree in Forensic Science, Criminal Justice, or a closely related field.
Must be able to lift up to twenty (20) pounds and be able to work under adverse conditions involving death and contact with grieving relatives and friends.

Preferences
Experience handling medical examiner death investigations.
American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI) certification

Salary Information

Pay Grade: 037 - $22.96
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Placement based on County Policy or bargaining unit contract

Educational Requirements

If your education was obtained in the United States, the County recognizes degrees or diplomas which are accredited by an agency recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). If you have obtained education from a country other than the United States, your degree or diploma must be evaluated to determine the United States equivalency by a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Service (NACES) or the Association of International Credentials Evaluations (AICE) at your expense.
