DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The duties of employees in this class involve
responsibility, during an assigned shift, for the overall efficient operation and maintenance of a wastewater
treatment plant, including the facilities for the activated sludge process and solids disposal. The work is
performed under general supervision of a higher-level operator. Supervision is exercised over the work of
subordinate operators. The incumbent performs related work as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must meet the minimum qualifications at time of application.
Either:
Open Competitive:
Possession of a Grade 3A Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certificate AND two (2) years of
experience in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant.
Promotional:
Possession of a valid Grade 3A Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certificate issued by the NYS
Department of Environmental Conservation AND full-time, permanent competitive status for a period of
twenty-four (24) months as a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator in the Oneida County Department
of Water Quality & Water Pollution Control.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid New York State driver's license at time of appointment.
License must remain valid throughout appointment.

- Candidates MUST submit copy of Grade 3A Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certificate with
application.
- Verifiable part-time experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.
