DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a one (1) year traineeship used to appoint
individuals to an entry-level Junior Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator. The position involves
responsibility for learning the duties, responsibilities and routines involved in the operation and maintenance
of a wastewater treatment plant. An appointee will undergo on-the-job training to become qualified as a first
level operator. The duties involve assisting in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment
plant by aiding certified operator(s) and/or maintenance personnel. The work is performed under immediate
supervision of a Senior Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator, who functions as shift leader. Supervision
over the work of others is not a responsibility of employees in this class. Condition of employment would
require satisfactory completion of the training program during their one (1) year trainee appointment period.
The incumbent performs related work as required. of a trained supervisor. The incumbent performs related
work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must meet the minimum qualifications at time of application.

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license at time of appointment. License must remain

valid throughout appointment.
2. Appointees must satisfactorily complete the home study course “Operation of Wastewater Treatment

Plants” (Volumes 1 and 2) developed by the California State University at Sacramento and obtain a
passing score on the final exam during their one (1) year trainee appointment period.

NOTE: Upon successful completion of the one (1) year traineeship the incumbent is appointed to the
position of Junior Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator without further examination.
