Legal Assistant expected starting salary is $24.40 to $32.59. Full salary range is $24.40 to $40.77.

Paralegal expected starting salary is $27.14 to $36.25. Full salary range is $27.14 to $45.35.

Legal Assistant:

Associate’s degree from an accredited college in legal studies, paralegal studies, criminal justice, or closely related field.
OR
A combination of education and experience equivalent to two (2) years of experience in a similar position as listed in the work functions.

Paralegal:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in legal studies, paralegal studies, criminal justice, or related field.
OR
Associate’s degree from an accredited college in legal studies, paralegal studies, criminal justice, or related field and two (2) years of experience in a similar position as listed in the work functions.
OR
A combination of education and experience equivalent to four (4) years of experience in a similar position as listed in the work functions.


Regular and reliable attendance is a necessary component of job/position. Individuals required to use County vehicles and equipment must have a valid driver's license and be free of any major traffic violations for the last three (3) years.

Under supervision, independently prepares documents for filing with the Court to establish and enforce child support orders, modifications of child support, and judgments. Reviews records, reports, statutes and case law, and the synthesis into appropriate form and content. At the direction of the supervisor and attorneys prepares cases for court hearings. Acts as subject matter expert in the preparation of legal documents. Supports a diverse, respectful, and inclusive workplace.
  • Reviews Minnesota statutes and case law and independently prepares documents for attorney review and filing with courts to institute and continue legal proceedings. 
  • Creates, maintains, and monitors files. Receives and reviews reports and evidence and shares with relevant parties.
  • Prepares legal documents for attorney signature and ultimate e-filing of those documents.
  • Communicates and coordinates information for individuals involved in cases.
  • Coordinates work with other staff and outside agencies. Manages calendars for attorneys.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
  • Knowledge of civil law and procedure, court process, and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of state statutes, procedural rules for local, district, state, specialty, federal courts, and administrative rules.
  • Knowledge of child support enforcement and procedures.
  • Skill in effective verbal and written communication including grammar, spelling, and composition.
  • Skill in the use of computers and technology.
  • Skill in preparing and interpreting legal documents.
  • Skill in the use of basic business math.
  • Ability to effectively organize and prioritize work to meet competing deadlines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to work with sensitive information and events.
  • Ability to maintain confidential data.
  • Ability to effectively organize and prioritize work.
  • Ability to understand and follow complex written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to communicate complex information in a simplified manner.
