About the Role
We are working with a fast-growing, technology-driven insurance organization that is seeking a visionary Head of Excess Casualty Claims to build and lead the excess casualty claims function from the ground up. This executive-level role is responsible for setting claims strategy, designing workflows, building a high-performing team, and ensuring alignment with underwriting and corporate objectives.
This is a unique opportunity to be the architect of a claims organization, focused on complex, high-severity casualty claims - including general liability, products liability, construction, and other E&S exposures. You'll play a critical role in delivering operational excellence, fair claims outcomes, and long-term profitability.
Design and build the Excess Casualty claims function - including all operating procedures, systems, governance structures, and performance metrics.
Recruit, develop, and lead a team of claims professionals with expertise in handling complex, high-exposure excess and umbrella liability claims.
Establish clear reserving, litigation, and settlement strategies in alignment with the company's risk appetite and underwriting philosophy.
Serve as the final authority on complex and high-severity claims, providing technical oversight and strategic direction on coverage, liability, and damages.
Manage relationships with TPAs, defense counsel, and key external partners, ensuring service quality, cost-effectiveness, and consistent application of company standards.
Partner with underwriting, actuarial, reinsurance, and finance to drive a closed-loop feedback system between claims and the broader business.
Leverage technology and data to streamline claims handling, identify trends, and improve outcomes.
Ensure full regulatory compliance and internal audit readiness across all jurisdictions.
Represent the claims function as part of the executive leadership team and contribute to enterprise-level strategy and innovation.
10 years of commercial casualty claims experience, with deep expertise in excess/umbrella liability, especially in the E&S market.
Proven leadership experience, including building or scaling claims operations and leading high-performing teams.
Strong knowledge of complex coverage issues, litigation management, reserve setting, and settlement strategies.
Familiarity with casualty exposures in sectors such as construction, manufacturing, energy, transportation, or real estate.
Experience managing TPAs, panel counsel, and vendor relationships.
Strategic thinker with the ability to execute operationally and manage high-severity portfolios with sound judgment.
Comfort working in a tech-forward, data-centric environment; experience leveraging claims systems and analytics to improve performance.
Excellent communication, negotiation, and leadership skills.
