What You’ll Do At DBH

  • Patrols campus grounds, buildings (interior and exterior checks) on foot & in car, ensures safety of patients/clients, visitors, & employees.
  • Assists in emergency/disaster situations (e.g., evacuation of buildings, inclement weather, hospital codes e.g.: Code Black, Silver, Red).
  • Makes professional efforts to prevent/deter criminal activities, enforces Ohio Revised Code e.g.: criminal laws, and testifies in court as required.
  • Checks identity of persons on grounds and the nature of their business and/or needs; monitors traffic conditions & parking facilities to ensure efficient flow of traffic, checks parking permits, & issues traffic tickets as necessary.
  • Investigates/reports alleged criminal complaints
  • Makes inquiries on security/safety issues, documents findings, and communicates with hospital administration regarding sensitive issues.
  • Screens/searches newly admitted patient(s) and their property for contraband via police policy during the admission process along with checking/logging their valuables with the business office.
  • Assists in interior clinical service functions e.g.: responds to Code Violets, Code Blue emergencies e.g.: assists nursing, medical or direct care personnel in emergent incidents that are out of their control and at the clinical supervisor’s request in dealing with patients in crisis by utilizing Crisis Intervention/De-escalation protocols.
  • Interior control/monitoring and screening (for deter/denying of contraband) of all visitors, returning patients in the utilization of the magnetometer, escorts, assists visitors. Assist in transporting forensic Level 1, 2 or Police Hold patient(s). Calls for assistance staff and/or visitors with mechanical problems.

This is an hourly position covered by the State of Ohio Unit 2 bargaining unit (union), with a pay range of #8 or #10 on the Unit 2 Pay Range Schedule. This position is located within our Heartland Behavioral Healthcare at 3000 Erie Street South, Massillon, OH 44646.

Unless required by any applicable union contract and/or requirements of the Ohio Revised Code, the selected candidate will begin at Step 1 of the pay range schedule listed above, with an opportunity for pay increase after six months of satisfactory performance and then a yearly raise thereafter.

Additional Salary / Appointment Information

  • Police Officer 1, pay range 8 ($23.84/hour) to Police Officer 2, pay range 10 ($27.43/hour), Based on experience
  • Schedule may very, second/third shift
  • $1.25 shift differential pay for 2nd and 3rd shift full time, permanent employees
  • Yearly Fitness Incentive Pay (Not mandatory)
  • Longevity pay after completion of five (5) years of state service
  • Prior State Service may be transferred
  • Equipment & Uniforms provided

Position Qualifications

Formal education in arithmetic that includes fractions, decimals & percentages & in reading & writing English vocabulary; valid driver's license. Probationary period is one year.

  • Or possession of certificate having successfully completed approved basic peace officer training program or completion of 20 yrs. active duty as peace officer per Section 109.78 (D) of Ohio revised code for developmental disabilities & mental health facility employees. Probationary period is one year. Note: Applicant must be able to successfully perform Ohio Peace Officer Basic Training Program (OPOTC) Fitness Testing Entry Standards for New Recruits.
