Duties

The Antitrust Division (ATR) is seeking to fill a Statistician position in the Expert Analysis Group (EAG). EAG is responsible for the investigation, analysis, and interpretation of economic data relating to all phases of antitrust enforcement, to assure the economic reliability and validity of positions taken by the Division. The incumbent will collect data and perform statistical analysis through manual and automated techniques and evaluate the results.

As a Statistician For The Antitrust Division, You Will

  • Apply data wrangling and cleaning methodologies, statistical techniques, and methods of gathering and/or interpreting quantified information.
  • Employ statistical software tools to create data visualizations of varying complexity, including basic, static visualizations and detailed, interactive plots.
  • Plan, organize, and implement continuous recurring studies using established precedented statistical methods.
  • Provide statistical analysis and technical insight to subject matter experts and others on statistical theories and techniques.
  • Write and/or present comprehensive statistical reports prepared based on the data collected and provide professional advice and consultation about the results.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position, you must meet the Specialized Experience Requirements. Specialized experience is experience that has provided you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position as described above, and that is typically in or related to this position being filled.

To qualify for this position at the GS-09 level, your resume must reflect at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level.

Specialized Experience Must Demonstrate The Following

GS-09 level: One full year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-07 performing ALL the following:

  • Collecting, verifying, and adjusting information expressed numerically or graphically; AND
  • Analyzing data, drawing conclusions, and preparing reports after interpretation have been approved.

Substitution of education requirements allowed are outlined below.

GS-9:
2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Master's degree or Master's or equivalent graduate degree. NOTE: Transcript(s) must be provided.

Combination of graduate education and professional experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify for that grade level.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited based on time spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must clearly indicate the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

Basic Requirements

  • Degree: that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing. NOTE: Transcript(s) must be provided.

OR

  • Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in paragraph A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance. NOTE: Transcript(s) must be provided.

  • Foreign Education: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
