What are the responsibilities and job description for the EXPERIENCED WORKING SHOP FOREMAN / LEAD METAL FABRICATOR position at Ny Ornamental LLC?
NY Ornamental LLC is looking for an experienced Working Shop Foreman / Lead Metal Fabricator to join our shop in Mount Vernon.
This is NOT a desk foreman position.
We need someone who can get on the floor, read the drawings, lay out the job, fabricate alongside the crew, solve problems, and make sure the work gets out of the shop correctly and on schedule.
We fabricate steel stairs, railings, miscellaneous steel, structural support steel, aluminum and stainless-steel railings, ladders, bollards, canopies, window guards, angles, channels, plates, brackets and custom metal work.
If you are an experienced fabricator who can take a set of shop drawings and turn them into a finished product without needing someone to walk you through every step, we want to talk to you.
What You'll Be Doing
You will work directly with the owner and help take responsibility for day-to-day fabrication in the shop and field installation and coordination.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Working hands-on with the fabrication crew
- Reading and interpreting shop drawings
- Laying out stairs, railings and miscellaneous steel
- Fitting and welding fabricated assemblies
- Assigning work to fabricators and keeping the crew productive

- Catching drawing, layout and fabrication problems early
- Coordinating material needs and job priorities with the office
- Making sure the correct material is being used
- Monitoring quality and workmanship
- Helping less-experienced fabricators when necessary
- Keeping multiple jobs moving through the shop
- Maintaining an organized, productive and safe work environment
- Preparing completed work for delivery and installation
You MUST Be Able To:
- Read shop drawings independently
- Read a tape measure accurately
- Perform fabrication layout
- MIG weld proficiently
- Fit and fabricate steel assemblies
- Work with tubing, pipe, angle, channel, plate and structural shapes
- Check square, diagonals, angles and dimensions
- Understand weld symbols and fabrication details
- Use fabrication equipment including saws, drills, grinders and related shop equipment
- Troubleshoot fabrication problems without waiting for someone else to solve every issue
- Work productively while also directing other employees
Strong experience fabricating stairs and railings is highly preferred.
Experience with stainless steel and aluminum is a plus.
We're Looking for a Fabricator First — Foreman Second
We are specifically looking for a working foreman.
We do not need someone who stands around telling other people what to do.
We need someone who can pick up the drawings, lay out a stair or railing, work alongside the crew, answer fabrication questions and make sure the finished product is right.
You should be the type of person who catches a mistake before the material gets cut or welded.
Quality and accuracy matter. So does production.
Leadership
You do not need to be a corporate manager.
You DO need to be able to:
- Organize a small fabrication crew
- Give clear direction
- Hold people accountable
- Teach when necessary
- Keep employees working efficiently
- Communicate problems to the owner
- Take ownership of the work going through the shop
We want someone who can eventually become a key person in our company and help us improve production, organization and quality control as we grow.
Top compensation is intended for candidates who can independently handle fabrication layout, read drawings, fabricate stairs and railings, troubleshoot problems and effectively lead a shop crew.
